I don't post very often but I think I've figured it out. We put out the vibe that we were going for batshitcrazy then Chelsea bids and wins while we swoop in for their main target Morata. Cue the optimism.

Finally getting something back on our special relationship with Real Madrid? ;)

Also, while Levy gets knocked for moving to a plan b signing, let's not forget that Chelsea are probably only moving for Batshuayi having decided not to spend big on Lukaku.

I imagine Everton will be asking very silly money for him following their buyout. Frankly there aren't that many strikers out there for Chelsea right now, given their lack of European football next season and the fact that half of them have already played for Chelsea before. Batshuayi might be one of only a few quality options available to them.

"Lessons have been learned" "We have been in contact with our list of targets since January", "We have money to spend, our revolving credit facility has been drawn", "Levy and Lewis are determined to back Poch", "We have our targets but the asking price is currently too high, the selling club is hoping to start a bidding war","everything was in place but we just ran out of time","Lessons have been learned, deal already in place for January", "We are bery bery happy with our squad, Harry Kane is a great striker, he is all we need"

Why the surprise with Batshuayi, I am sure I read more than once from Trix and JJ that it wasn't happening prior to the interest from Chelsea.

It was never likely to happen. Not with all the TV revenue these days. If it wasn't Chelsea, there was always going to be a team prepared to stump up the cash (Palace/WHAM).

Playing hardball on a high profile target, when everyone has loadsa money isn't a great strategy. That's why it seems we have looked elsewhere, with VJ. Makes sense tbh.

I think we moved on weeks ago - when the Janssen pursuit started. No way we were going to pay anywhere near £30m for him

Wouldn't it magnificent if Levy had been saving up for years and years just to get one back on Chelscum. Perhaps we'll outbid 'em just when he's about to sign on the dotted line.

I agree, £30m is excessive but at the same time it's the going rate, even for average to mildly decent strikers. What I am alarmed about is we have confirmed interest in Janssen and Sanabria but the most recent ITK is that it's 'interest and nothing is close', so in effect we're no closer to resolving our striker crisis now than we were last season.
