This is damage limitation. Trying to pick this team is very hard. Players off form, players out suspended/injured, confidence shot to pieces. This could get seriously nasty very quickly.
We have to get back to basics 4-2-3-1.
Think we go out hard to beat and hope for abit of individual brilliance from someone...

Lloris; Walker, Dier, Wimmer, Vertonghen; Dembele, Wanyama; Sissoko, Alli, Eriksen; Kane.

No left back so seems only sensible to switch to the system we used against Arsenal. I'd use Alli on the left as he has the engine to get up and down each game and is versatile enough to play there, the alternative is Nkoudou.

Think we should play this all season now

4-2-3-1. No Wanyama. We need to get back to last season's system as a matter of urgency. Unfortanately with Alderweireld, Rose and Davies unavailable that means a bit of a scratch defence, but Dier moving back to DM will give us more solidity than what we've had lately.

The players had better make up for that horrendous performance last night.

let's go 4-3-3

Lloris

Walker
Dier
Wimmer
Vertonghen

Wanyama
Winks
Eriksen

Dembele
Kane
Son

Alli to come off the bench if needed, but his performance was casual in the extreme last night.

That midfield should be able to win the ball back and retain well, plus there's more brains in there to move the ball better with more purpose.

Get Dembele further up.the pitch for the love of God.

We'll need Son's pace and directness given we've no Rose. Let's hope it's one of his better days, but for balance he's essential as Poch won't start NKD.

Firstly I don't believe for a second all that BS about Chelsea being scared of us because we commited a few fouls last season

They had the last laugh

I actually don't think that game will have any baring though - If I'm honest I fear the worst, I think we will lose and potentially lose bad

We do often save our better performances for the bigger teams though so hopefully we can see a reaction against them and a game that more resembles our performance vs Man City than what we saw last night

Chelsea are in good form but they're not unbeatable - they barely beat Burnely

I'd take a draw right now if offered though as I feel our chances of winning are slim and they're probably clear favourites to win

Can't Wimmer play left back like he does for Austria? Need Verts as a centre back

Reckon we could borrow the Monaco team? They looked committed, passionate and organised with a coherent plan of what to do

This game comes at about as shit a time as it possibly could have, what with injuries, suspensions, lack of form, and coming off a poor performance that put us out of the Champions League. Just piss poor timing.

Missing both Rose and Davies is absolutely killer, as is (probably) not having Toby. It seriously limits our options to plug and play the defense effectively against a very good attacking Chelsea squad. The only way I can see to maintain balance and help shore up our fully second-choice CB pairing is to go with something like this:

Lloris
Walker -- Dier -- Wimmer -- Vertonghen
Wanyama -- Dembele
Eriksen -- Alli -- Son
Kane

I'd be OK with dropping one of the three behind Kane in favor of Winks, with him and Dembele pivoting between being next to Wanyama and in the middle of those attaching three.

We're not going to get a lot of love bombing up their wings given their formation, so this will crowd the middle a bit more and force them to address being overloaded in the middle.

MIssing Lamela's intensity and creativity is also a huge, huge blow and can't be overstated enough right now.

Lloris
Walker Dier Wimmer Vertonghen
Wanyama Winks Dembele
Eriksen Son N'Koudou
Kane

Would imagine Vertonghen will not be instructed to go bombing forwards like Rose would, hence my inclusion of N'Koudou on the left to provide width. Eriksen played well off the right earlier this season and I feel Son would benefit running off Kane. Let him drift out to the left with N'Koudou and let Dembele or Winks fill his place. Going to be a very tough match.

Subs: Vorm, Alli, Janssen, Carter-Vickers, Walker-Peters, Onomah, Sissoko

He's not even had a proper run in the team, stop jumping on the bandwagon.

Too true although he does look a little hot & cold (to put it kindly) and we're probably not playing him in his best position but...

Didn't Sissoko start against Man City when they were unbeaten in every game and we mashed them up?

He can play alright just need to get him involved properly and use him correctly and get his head in the right place etc etc etc

Easy this manager lark...

I'd rather play Onomah than Sissoko if that what it takes.
I tend to agree, but if we are to start Onomah then we need to play him in his best position which is centrally. He is no good on the right as he's not a winger.

I actually got a lot of funny ratings for putting Onomah and Winks in my team for Chelsea but i'd like to see people put forward cases for Alli and Eriksen to start there considering how awful they have been. How badly do they have to play before they are dropped?

I hope Toby is fit for the game.

If Toby is fit...

Lloris
Dier,Toby,Wimmer,
Walker, Vertonghen
Alli,Wanyama, Winks, Son
Kane

If Toby is not fit...

Lloris
Dier,CCV,Wimmer,
Walker, Vertonghen
Alli,Wanyama, Winks, Son
Kane

Either way, I want to go with 3 at the back and 2 wing backs in Walker & Vertonghen.

Just can't get my head around whether he is the problem
I don't think he's the problem per se.

Usually there is a complete lack of passing options when either he or the defence have the ball. There is zero movement in front of them and no one gets anywhere near close enough so that we can get the ball upfield. It usually goes back to Hugo who hoofs it anywhere, most of the time out of play.

The solution is to give him passing options or look at a midfielder that excels with long passing who will be able to pick someone out when there is no one close. I tend to think we should look at the latter to give us more flexibility in our build up play.

There is too much predictability when we play it out from the back, the players are not fluid enough to find space for passes and so we are easily sussed.
