Walker---Winks---Wanyama---KWP
---Janssen---
Kane-------Lamela

Vorm, Trippier, Dier, Sissoko, Dembele, Alli, GKN

I don't know if it's just how it appeared on my phone or whether you meant to type it but Janssen as a number 10 made me proper LOL.

Jan wing back!!! Come on mate I know he's superman but he'll need a taxi to get back and help out his defence

Well, am inventing a reason for him being not played yesterday. Given he had a week off, he better be ready to play Wingback.
Btw, given Jan regularly plays LB for Belgium, why does a left WB seems a impossibility ?

The hard reality is we have to play him in LB. Given our style needs width from full backs, he has to be prepared to run whether he is a LB or LWB

It's a tricky one. We need to outnumber Kante and Matic in their midfield whilst still remaining compact and not giving their wingbacks acres of space like we did against Monaco.

Verts needs to play CB for me, particularly after seeing the shambles last night. Appreciate that leaves us shagged at LB but we need someone to take some leadership back there:

Hugo

Dier - notional left back.
Verts
Wimmer
Kyle

Dembele
Wanyama
Winks

Son
Kane
Dele

God knows actually. Looking forward to this less than I was the arsenal game!

4-2-3-1. No Wanyama. We need to get back to last season's system as a matter of urgency. Unfortanately with Alderweireld, Rose and Davies unavailable that means a bit of a scratch defence, but Dier moving back to DM will give us more solidity than what we've had lately.

................................Lloris

Walker...Carter-Vickers...Wimmer...Vertonghen

........................Dier.......Dembele

............Son...............Alli...............Eriksen

................................Kane

Sorry mate...Taking out Wanyama is insane. He has been the standout player since start of season. Yes, he had couple of not so good games. But not playing him ahead of out of form, slow Dembele will go wrong. Dier too has not shown anything this season.

IMO, Wanyama probably alongside Winks is the way to go, instead of going with Dier-Dembele.

Surprised no one has mentioned Tom Carrol for left wing back. I don't think it will happen as resting Vert is a clear statement he's going to left back...but I think the Arsenal game and our form indicates that we need the solidity of a back 5 in a game like this.

So I'd play:
Lloris
Dier Vert Wimmer
Walker Wanyama Dembelle Carrol
Sissoko Kane Eriksen

Carol was a youth left back before moving to midfield and has great stamina to get up and down and will know the importance of the derby game. I'd switch him out for Son for a second half boost of pace and thrust if we are behind . And I'd trust that in a shorter 20-30 min shift Son would have enough left in his legs to do the up and down defensive work like against West Ham.

Subbing Ali Son and maybe even Winks for dembelle carrol and wanyama into the midfield to freshen legs in what will be a long second half for players playing their 3rd tough game in 8 days otherwise.

This side is at least solid and should have fresh energy conserved up front to counter and press with some pace. Half of the outfield side ( and all the stamina positions) will have had a week off or will only need to give an hour and I have a feeling Sissoko will produce. But Kane will have to grind it out on Spirit for a tough 90 minutes

Lloris
Walker----Dier----Vertonghen----Trippier
Wanyama----Dembele
Eriksen----Winks----Son
Kane

Unless Lamela is fit then he replaces Eriksen on the right

Carol at LWB is not a bad shout. But I really question is his big game mentality. If we have to go youth, I would rather go Kyle Walker Peters instead of Carol. Atleast, KWP played as Left back in the preseason. While its not his best trained position, the lad does have some talent.

Wanyama isn't disciplined enough to play that role. He doesn't drop into the centre backs like Dier did last season, meaning there's less protection for the full backs to get forward. He roams too much and far too often this means Dembele (or whoever else is the more forward thinking of the midfield) can't drive forward as much.

Last night his use of the ball was diabolical, constantly playing straight passes down the middle to someone with their back to goal whilst surrounded by defenders. On numerous occasions Monaco were breaking at us and Wanyama was casually jogging back when he should be the screen to break up those attacks.

In fact plenty of others were pointing out last night (although that was by no means the first time it has happened) that by accommodating Wanyama in a position he does not as effectively fit into as Dier we have sacrificed a huge element of the style we used so effectively last season. Move Dier back to DM and Dembele will be able to drive forward, committing defenders and creating space for the three behind Kane, and Dier has the discipline to stay back and provide the protection to allow the full backs to get forward.

Not sure where to begin with this...

First , Dier this season is nowhere near to Dier last season - whether in preseason (in CM or CB) or for England or in games. Thats a thing to be acknowledged.

Second , It is undeniable truth that Eriksen has been abysmal this season.

Third, Dembele of last season is nowhere near Dembele of this season.

Fourth, Creativity of Dele Alli of last season has been nowhere near this season.

Fifth , its a given that we have missed Kane. Even when Kane played, he lacked sharpness of last season.

Sixth, Walker, Rose, Toby, Jan & Lloris has been the constant shining lights of this season (rarely had bad games)

You talk about style. What style can Wanyama bring when players around him Dembele , Eriksen, Alli, Lamela, Janssen (or lack of Kane) have had a worse start to the season.

Wanyama already had 3 or 4 MOM performances , these underperforming stars cannot show that.

So, instead of blaming Wanyama , why not look what other players have (not) contributed individually ?

I don't understand the criticism of Wanyama. I think he has been very good and solid for us, seen him play a number of times live this year and his defensive work and positioning is outstanding.

Although I agree Dier, playing the defensive midfield is ideal, given that he acts as third CB, poses an extreme threat at set pieces (when Toby is fit) and provides that extra cover at defending set pieces, he isn't in very good form at the moment. I do get a bit nervous when he is on the ball as tends to turn it over a bit now.
