Berahino is a younger, less talented version of Defoe with a worse attitude. Whilst a player of his theoretical attributes (a fast, nippy striker that can run with the ball) would be good to have, I can't see Berahino reaching his potential here now. This ship has sailed, let him find his level at Stoke or someone.

That is a pretty lazy comparison.

Berahino for a start is a lot taller and physically stronger than Defoe so is able to play the lone striker role to far greater effect - Defoe is not the most effective lone man, yes he may be doing okay for Sunderland but they are pretty shite so their standards are lower.

Defoe is an average Premier League striker who I don't believe has ever managed 20 league goals in a season and aside from goals could go completely missing at times, not adding anything to link up play etc and needing a big centre forward to play off most of the time.

And I lost count of the number of times he powder puffed a shot straight at the keeper...

I know people love him on here and rightly so given his service to us but there were a lot better strikers than him in his prime and he is a completely different kettle of fish to Berahino...

No fan of that idiot Durham on talkshite but said that Berahinho has amazingly quick feet to shift and switch into a goalscoring position.

Edit - and also West friggin' Brom - a team that don't really create the right sort of chances for someone like him.

A lot of this bad attitude is from Pulis hanging him out to dry. Pulis constantly lies about players, he did it at Stoke all the time, he agreed with Begovic to leave him out as Chelsea were interested and next thing he goes on the tele saying Begovic refused to play, he likes to paint players in a bad light, he has done this on more than one occasion

I don't think it is a lazy comparison. Berahino is 5ft11, not exactly a massive target man that plays with his back to goal. Both are best playing off the shoulder of the last defender and getting a chance to run at the opposition.

It's not like Berahino has ever proven himself as particularly prolific or more talented than the "average Premier League striker" that Defoe is. His best season was two years ago when he scored 14 in 38 PL games. Whoop de doo. Defoe beat that last season aged 33 playing for an awful Sunderland side (and looks set to do so again this year).

He's had question marks over his head for years and years, long before Pulis:

Let's go get him now and let Pochettino go to work with him. We clearly wanted him before with a huge bid for him and he'd cost less than half now. We only have two strikers at the club (Son is not a striker!) and we'll be absolutely fucked if anything happens to Kane. We do not need anything else other than another striker. It's the only obvious weakness in our squad. Surely Berahino would be a gamble worth taking!

Regardless of how the song goes, Poch isn't magic. Townsend, Carroll, Mason, Ceballos...even he couldn't get them to fulfil the potential we once thought they had. He has immediately iced every single player that has shown any signs of a bad attitude throughout his career - even people like Osvaldo who was Southampton's record signing only half a season earlier, or Raul Tamudo who was a club legend at Espanyol, so signing a player with Berahino's track record is a disaster waiting to happen. It's not even like the guy had shown Van Persie or Cassano levels of ability despite the attitude, he was a slightly above average young player who got famous because he scored the winner at Old Trafford and had a cool name. I doubt he's got any better in the last 18 months sitting on West Brom's bench.

No thank you.

I really hope DL sends Jeremy Peace a weekly picture of the £20M he turned down.

Not everything works out for our Dan. I really wished we had paid the small fee for Fulham's Dembele then loaned him back this time last year. Hindsight and all that....

Much more to Dembele story and we didn't miss out we chose not to do the deal after his medical....

I have to say, as much as I was disappointed when WBA refused to deal with us, I had really gone off the idea of SB. His attitude and performances since had been poor and I'm not surprised he's been left out of match day squads this season.

With WBA rejecting summer bids of £20m, he seems a pricey acquisition for someone with questionable attitude. However... given how we have a viable backup for pretty much every position in the team... except striker, you'd say that SB is worth a punt.

He seems more likely to score than Janssen (if he were to move) as we know he can do it. And if/when we need to leave out Kane, relying on the 3 supporting attackers is not a viable league title chasing strategy.

I doubt we'll bid for him and I hope Janssen comes good.

We do seem hyper sensitive to a medical, Demba Ba and Remy being 2 we shied away from. I suspect we make a business decision given our history of players with long injuries.
