No, we're obviously not "happy" to drop out of the top 4. So much nonsense being spouted this morning. I bet if we tonked West Ham there wouldn't be so much drama about Ross Barkley.
The drama is because we are not on form never mind flying like periods of last periods of last season and the season before. Dembele's decline and others' lack of form/injury could mean that the rot is setting in and certain players will leave. Perhaps they have mentally already left hence deals being done for the summer to replace leavers.

We have an opportunity to address weakness this month. We should do it. No point waiting till summer especially when there is a World Cup around the corner

This... But then the cost brigade will break it down soon. It doesn't make financial sense...its best to wait until the last week of August... Thats when our targets are available.

I wonder if when Barkley got his injury we looked for an alternative in case the injury was too bad and found someone good enough to make us think again on Barkley.
My problem with that is why can't we have both? I am disappointed if a Ross Barkley deal has fallen through.

Window shuts before season start this summer, doesn't it? They've changed it.

There's always talk about getting deals done early for the end of the season, but why not get them sorted for January if you can't get it over the line in the summer? Of course nobody would want to lose a player mid season, but money talks and if they're good enough for us they wouldn't want to be lost in the first place.

Let's not delude ourselves or get unnecessarily optimistic about a mega signing this month. Best I'm hoping for, and even that is a long shot, is a deal for sessegnon for the summer

Assuming the player from Watford is Richarlison and not a re-signing of Gomes/Kaboul, I'd be a little bit underwhelmed. He's got potential, but not exactly a Salah type, is he. Be interesting to see what his price tag is.

Salah was not Salah type 3 years back. Richarlison is only 20. Half a season in PL for a average side has got 5 goals & 5 assists. He looks to have what it takes to succeed in PL. So, lets not write him off already

I suspect the apparently insignificant (in some people's opinion) £40mil+ is the reason we can't just buy both tbh.

You think Ross Barkley would cost £40million plus or do you think we can only afford to buy one player?

i think thats nonsense to be honest
At the end of the window virtually every poster said we are short of an attacking pacy midfielder that could make a difference and help against teams that just defend, bearing in mind we have drawn at home against a load of shit teams and in most of those games created very little its hardly just on the back of another poor home performance
we all knew what we needed in the summer, for one reason or another we didnt spend the money and improve our attacking options and no shit sherlock this is what has happened

Christ all fucking mighty, reading this thread this morning, this is why we're not allowed to have nice things.

Logic gets thrown out the window and is replaced with self proclaimed knowledge driven by agenda.

15-20mil transfer fee 100k per week for 5 years wages plus agents fees etc is well in excess of 40 mil. That's just for Barkley, and if it doesn't work out injury wise we are stuck with that, or at least the bulk of it.

Which is certainly not Ross Barkley.

Just as Poch demands January transfers, we let one slip in preference for a summer one that might happen.

par for the course. happens EVERY single window, linked with player "a" all but agreed, something happens behind the scenes, people harp on abou levy being a cheap ****. itk's come in and smooth everything over, window ends, everyone is deflated, says if we'd signed player x/y/z we could have done this or that. i dont know why people here expect any different.

I think the best we can hope for this window is securing Sessegnon for the summer.

I like it when we buy players. I like Barkley. But even I think that a £40m punt on Barkley is too risky and I don't usually bother myself with the details in respect of fees etc. Way too risky.

I had always felt that Ross Barkley is a hugely overrated footballer some moments where he looks good but the majority of time just bang average...in the Walcott category really.

However when we got linked with him and were seemingly nailed onto sign him I made myself warm to the idea and started to concentrate on his better aspects, and now am gutted we aren't getting him. Mind you I had a similar feelings with Arshavin and Wellbeck before and in the end we really didn't miss out on much so I'm sure we will cope and move onto the next thing.

As I've said before, Barkley has as much chance of going to the WC as Danny Drinkwater if he joins Chelsea. Not bothered that we didn't throw 15m and 100k per week at a player in his condition to be honest. Chelsea have found their replacement for Steve Sidwell I'd imagine.
