Sterling ran his ass off today. Yeah, Yeah he could've done a lot better in front of goal etc...but his general graft and application today was spot on. Same goes for Lingard.
If his application was spot on, Kane wouldn’t have had to take the ball off him just to have a shot

He does make space for others which is good but at what cost? I just feel it's hindering Kane a bit primarily for the benefit of Sterling, who has been very poor.

It's incredible that Kane is the top scorer in a team that isn't really set up to provide him with chances.

Yes maybe but England is missing an Eriksen type. Its a great avtion from Kane and Sterling that sets up Maguires goal.

Sterling was fine. The idea that any one can do what he does is just bizarre, he carries the ball forward incredibly well.

The amount of scrutiny he gets is ridiculous. I'm sure a certain newspaper campaign has nothing to do with this.

Congratulations with the semi-final you English lads. However, not wanting to spoil the party ...but the road to the semis have been amazingly easy for England - through Tunisia, Panama, Colombia and Sweden (no Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Portugal or France in their way). I can name another 20 + teams who could have "managed" that
And even Russia or Croatia in the semi is an rather "over-comable" opponent compared to the other semi with Belgium & France.

The england teams of the last 10 years would have fallen at the supposed "easy" hurdles already.

Kane could’ve been put through about 3 times today but everyone chose the wrong pass, in particular Sterling who is so desperate for a goal, he tried to score instead of creating a certain goal for Kane.

So far he has a tap in, a 5 yard header, 3 penalties and a deflection. The worst montage ever in World Cup golden boot history.... and I couldn’t give a flying fuck. And neither could he I’m sure. But I’ll bet my mortgage he wants to score a worldie to show everyone he can score stunners on the big stage. He often gets into good positions but just never received the ball. He’s having to rely on set pieces every game. Hopefully this will change in the semi (I think it will if we play Russia).

As for everyone else. Trippier’s value must have literally tripled during this World Cup. Genuine contender for player of the tournament. Maguire was excellent. He’s great in the air and at set pieces but a dribbler like Hazard I think would cause him massive problems.

Sterling was Sterling. Ran a lot and created space but has the finishing ability of an 87 year old disabled woman (for England anyway). Dele took his goal well and played better than he has done but still not at his best, though grew into the game. Need him even more further forward. Henderson was ok, great block. Pickford excellent. Dier did well when he came on this time. Linguard good running, poor quality. Everyone else did ok. Don’t think we played particularly well and were very boring at times but fuck it, so were Sweden and we won.

It was only after looking at the so many replays that I saw Harry Kane having words with Maguire before the goal and noticed that HK had 3 Swedish players around him giving Maguire a clear run at the ball.

I'll quote the excellent Daniel Storey on Football 365 here.

The whataboutery will come from England’s detractors. You needed extra-time to beat Tunisia. You scored six, but only against a woeful Panama. You needed penalties to beat Colombia. You only beat Sweden. But that ignores the fact that these are exactly the hurdles that we expect England to trip up when attempting to jump. This is so captivating because it is so unusual.

England’s biggest match for 22 years, and they basically coasted to a World Cup semi-final. Have you ever heard anything so ridiculous in your life?

In short, we don't care and we won't stop enjoying it.

Can England afford to carry an AM who hasn't scored in 3 years?

I have nothing against Sterling personally, but he is a spectacularly bad fit in this set-up. All the running around in the world is not going to help if you have no end-product. He is greedy in the box. He has no rapport with Kane.

Moving Dele up to that role would be better, as would brining Rashford in for Sterling.

He doesn't just "run around" if that's honestly what you get from watching him I don't know what to say really? Carried? We just aren't even watching the same thing honestly.

Love Tripps and he’s been very good but wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t make it into the team of the tournament let alone best player of the tournament...

He’s been good but he hasn’t had a stand out ‘moment’ yet like say Pavard the French right back

sterling was terrible, sorry, it should have been 3-0 at ht but his ineptitude around the goal area is shocking.

youngs hold up play isnt helping, hes being shown the outisde but he never takes it because he hasnt the speed or the final ball.

kane would have had a goal or two more but for these two.

im hoping sarfgate is going to unleash rose in the semi and i dont care to see sterling in an england shirt ever again.

Sterling was great bar the finishing and final product, his runs and timing of the runs were exceptional, that's why he plays and I hope and expect he starts the semi final.

This team has got to the semi-final. I don't see Southgate changing it now.

Kane has looked pretty ineffective playing with Sterling.
What do we want to do, give chances to a players that scores goals or one that can run a little bit fast.
Plus playing Deli deep adds to the mess.

Watching the warm up games it looks like a ploy, Kane drops deep and Lingard, Sterling and Alli run into the space vacated for them, Kane playing deeper effectively renders him useless as a striker but it's working.

indeed. 2010 comes to mind where you managed to finish second in a group with USA, Algeria and Slovenia and drew Germany in the next round.

I don't fancy our chances if we play France would prefer Belgium.

Would be a totally different match, I reckon this England team would honestly be better playing on the counter rather than hogging possession, there's space in behind for Lingard and Sterling to run into.
