Surely the 'match any offers' bit refers to bids to the club, not the player? We're just letting the club know that if they decide to accept any offer for the player, we'll be in the mix. Until they accept an offer, we can't really do any business with the player, can we?I don't really understand why if we're "willing to match any other offers" that come in for him, we haven't made the first bid ourselves and just put our cards on the table. If he says no at that point or if we're not prepared to pay the asking price then just walk away.
It certainly doesn't make sense to just wait around to see if he decides he'll maybe think about joining us if other options don't materialise, when we actually have a position to fill.
EDIT: And just to be clear, I know it's definitely not as simple as the above!
Yeah, what I mean is that we're apparently waiting around to see if Barcelona put a bid in. If we make an offer ourselves and Ajax accept, then it's then up to De Jong at that moment to decide if he'll move to us or not. Basically, why don't we dictate the timing instead of just waiting to see what happens was my point.Surely the 'match any offers' bit refers to bids to the club, not the player? Love JJ and the update - de Jong is a highly ambitious and potentially game changing signing and he could be the next Luka - ballon d'or, top midfielder in the world, he's THAT good - but if it comes down to us and PSG, hasnt the problem with us always been wages? I'm not surprised in the least that we'd be willing to match the highest offer or even top it but if PSG offer 75m euros and 300k a week and we offer 80m euros and 175k a week..that's the difference of us getting a player or not. Am I off in thinking that?
What has he actually done to justify the hype? He does look good, but don't see this 80m player other people do

£ 67 mil and £ 120 a week? Not outside the boundaries of possibility IMONo shot we would match that
Shouldn't be.£ 67 mil and £ 120 a week? Not outside the boundaries of possibility IMO
Well it seems we have the money to spend on De Jong. If he really doesn’t want us why not spend that money on NDombele instead and get him in sharpish if possible? He’s not much of a down grade if at all.
Interesting, when did he say that?We don’t rate him as highly according to JJ.
I'm at the point where I genuinely believe the club somehow think De Jong is the only CM in the world good enough to sign.We don’t rate him as highly according to JJ.
