Well, Levy knows already that he's not coming, so he can safely bid whatever others bid and then say "we tried". Sneaky baldhead.

( A joke)

I don't really understand why if we're "willing to match any other offers" that come in for him, we haven't made the first bid ourselves and just put our cards on the table. If he says no at that point or if we're not prepared to pay the asking price then just walk away.

It certainly doesn't make sense to just wait around to see if he decides he'll maybe think about joining us if other options don't materialise, when we actually have a position to fill.

EDIT: And just to be clear, I know it's definitely not as simple as the above!
Surely the 'match any offers' bit refers to bids to the club, not the player? We're just letting the club know that if they decide to accept any offer for the player, we'll be in the mix. Until they accept an offer, we can't really do any business with the player, can we?

Yeah, what I mean is that we're apparently waiting around to see if Barcelona put a bid in. If we make an offer ourselves and Ajax accept, then it's then up to De Jong at that moment to decide if he'll move to us or not. Basically, why don't we dictate the timing instead of just waiting to see what happens was my point.

A couple of points on this, as I get your point and kinda agree.

First, I think De Jong probably has a preferred destination which he’s holding out for. If that club don’t come in for him then we’ll meet the value of any other club that does.

Second, look at some of the deals the likes of Barca, Bayern Juventus etc have done, in comparison to the Premier League. For some reason, I assume the TV deal and the sovereign wealth clubs, there is a Premium for clubs in England.

If we match the bid of a club outside of England we’d likely pay less than we would if we were to lead from the front on the bidding.

Not sure if any of that is right but it’s how I read it.

Love JJ and the update - de Jong is a highly ambitious and potentially game changing signing and he could be the next Luka - ballon d'or, top midfielder in the world, he's THAT good - but if it comes down to us and PSG, hasnt the problem with us always been wages? I'm not surprised in the least that we'd be willing to match the highest offer or even top it but if PSG offer 75m euros and 300k a week and we offer 80m euros and 175k a week..that's the difference of us getting a player or not. Am I off in thinking that?

JJ has already indicated that De Jong has said he doesn't want to join us as he would rather go to Barcelona/PSG. So even if we do agree a fee with Ajax it makes no difference as the player will turn us down while those clubs tell him they are after him.

not off at all. We can sort of compete on wages with Arsenal/Chelsea and maybe Liverpool but PSG/City? Nah

If the lad believes he can go there and hold down a spot then he will - We've become a great underdog side in the last few years but we're not certain to win anything yet.

What has he actually done to justify the hype? He does look good, but don't see this 80m player other people do

Do kinda see where you are coming from, however he is from what little I've seen (Ajax and Holland) an almost complete player, and an extremely refined and classy one at that. Can pass, dribble, tackle and reads the game brilliantly (sometimes plays in a back 3). Obviously the caveat is that he's doing it in the dutch league however Ajax also had a superb CL group stage.

He is basically the #1 CM U21 prospect in Europe, so in this market that crazy price is expected.

Last season some people on here were talking about us buying him as a centre back, too. Things have moved on pretty quickly for him, and I think Holland's international resurgence with him in the middle of the pitch has certainly helped on the hype front.

I think one of the reasons he's so highly prized is due to these progressive managers at top clubs wanting confident ball-players who are defensively disciplined and tactically educated all in one. It's a fairly rare mix, especially if you need that player to already be displaying a high level of talent and still be young enough to mould.

He pretty much ticks all of those boxes.

I think 4-5 years ago it would have been a lot easier for us to buy a player in his situation.

PSG, Barca, and City are all vying for his signature. Even if the circumstances were to change with, say, PSG, we would need all three of those clubs to drop their interest in order to have any chance.

We need to move onto other targets. Hopefully JJ's response to the question of whether we have other irons in the fire ("There is also our database and software used with all players in Europe so we know about everyone as does most top clubs its just how we think they will be used for us to fulfill our requirements") is something of a hint that we are at least sounding out alternatives. We desperately need a CM signing and honestly have done since the summer of 2017. It's got to be rectified.

It’s all well and good us being interested and willing to match any bid but if the player himself isn’t keen on Spurs then it’s hard to feel that we aren’t wasting our time a little. It’s probably not too difficult to get in touch with a player or his representatives to sound the like of that out.

Well it seems we have the money to spend on De Jong. If he really doesn’t want us why not spend that money on NDombele instead and get him in sharpish if possible? He’s not much of a down grade if at all.

We don’t rate him as highly according to JJ.

For what it's worth, PSG are supposedly after Weigl on loan with an option. Not sure if that has any relevance to De Jong as he won't be going anywhere till summer.
