Defoe has the same agent as Scumbell, so I'll not be surprised to see this getting dragged out for ages.

If he wants to stay at the club then he should sign regardless of whether or not he is currently in our starting line-up. We need players that want to be here and are good enough to be here, not players with the required ability that want to be here but only depending on X, Y and Z.

No doubt Defoe will start against pompey. more than one preson will call it his last chance Saloon.

How many last chance Saloons has JD had? He should actually open a bar called "last chance saloon"

I really really hope he does but I'll believe it when I see it.

He must be at the stage where in this window he either signs a new deal or the club looks to move him on? otherwise (correct me if im wrong) isnt he able to talk to other clubs about signing with them come the summer?

We really need him to resign, that way even if we sold him we could command a decent few for him. I honestly believe the only way he would sign now is if he goes on a long run of playing and scoring (starting with Keanes suspention i.e. now) I dont think it will happen and even if it did I still think he will end up signing on a free for Pompey or Villa (or whoever puts a better offer on his desk)

I think the situation as a whole is weird. On the 1 hand you have defoe saying he loves the club and wants to stay but wont sign the contract. On the other the club has paid 16 odd million for bent. If defoe had been 3rd choice and was coming on for 30-40 mins a game and also starting when the likes of berba and keane are rested, suspended or whatever then imo he would of signed a new deal. With the bent situation i think somewhere along the line something has been said to give him as many opportunities as he needs to get firing and that is at defoe's expense. Can you imagine another situation like rebrov? You pay all that money and he turns out to be not that good and ends up leaving for nothing. The club dont want bent to go well they have just paid 16 mil for me and im 4th choice so im off for first team footy. Then some team comes in and is only willing to 5 mil cos 1. He hasn't played much at all or 2. He hasn't cut the mustard. I think in either situation 1 of them would go anyway and i dont think the club would let that be bent after the money spent so i think defoe will definately go unless something drastic happens.

Isn't defoe contracted until summer 2009?

Thought that the contract talks were to prevent this going into the final year.

I hope he stays. I do like him. He's just rubbish.

Really?! - cos in the last two games he's looked more likely to score than any of our other strikers. For me his attitude on the pitch is sorely needed, he's hungry for goals and isn't afraid to have a go. Despite little pitch time he's caused the opposition a different problem. Against brum he made the keeper to have to tip over from a fairly innocuous position and on Sunday he scored a great strikers goal - he wasn't lucky to be on the end of the rebound, he ran in for the intial cross, when it was held up he cut back into the space and took the finish very well. I'd start him over Bent.

Defoe wants to stay?

THEN SIGN THE DAMN CONTRACT!!!

I like JD. I want him to stay. But if he's trying to do a Scumbell on us, then hand me my assault rifle.

Defoe does want to stay, has said it many times along with loving the club and the fans.

But i realy cant see why he would sign, it will probably be Bent and Berbatov starting the next 2 league games with Keane in for the cup game. He has shown what he can do when he has been used as a sub, looked lively and is a natural striker who will have a go at goals, something i feel we have been missing and thought Bent would have brought in.

Defoe just isn't happy at being 4th choise.

Absolutely. Having been screwed royally by Sky "I've never encouraged a player to break a contract" Andrew over Judas, Levy is not going to let it happen again. And all the fine words from JD are, frankly, irrelevant.

JD has 18 months left on his contract. His pricetag is now diminishing fast. By next summer, with only a year left, the transfer fee he can command will be dropping like a stone. Therefore, in his business hat, I have no doubt that Levy will be saying: "Sign in January, or we sell you in January".

I like Defoe, even though I think his game hasn't improved as much as I'd hoped since joining Spurs. But for Levy it's a straight business situation. Whether I agree or not, for Levy, Defoe is an asset on the balance sheet, and his contractual situation means he's now a depreciating asset...

dont think there has been a question mark over if Defoe wants to stay or not, more over will he get enough of the games or gametime to make him want to sign the contract

But surely that's the point. If he's happy, then surely that means he's happy if he's playing or not. If he's not happy because he's not playing then he should refuse a contract and asked to be transferred. Keeping the club hanging is not solving anything.

Defoe has said afew times that he is happy at Tottenham as a club and with the fans, that is enough to be happy at the club yet still have problems beind the scene, ie hardly ettign any game time.

Maybe he doesnt want to leave, but wishes to stay at a club he likes, and all he wants is a chance to play  all the club has to do is tell him if he will get enough games/gametime/chances to make him want to stay, maybe its the club keeping Defoe waiting?
