Bremer signs and he starts, no doubt in my mind. Dier and Davies are very good players, but Bremer is absolutely elite.

Believe it or not, he’s actually slightly better than Romero defensively. No he’s not the great passing outlet we expected for the backline, but if he signs then that means Conte has accepted that he needs to adjust his system to be able to fit in an absolutely elite player.
I just can't see Conte benching Dier, who is performing very well in that role. I'm all for squad depth but it seems a little excessive for that particular position.

Obviously on paper the fit is a bit odd. He’s not the ideal LCB if Conte wants to replicate our style from last season. And neither is Romero, if we want Bremer to play RCB. I think Davies’ contribution to our attack was hugely important and underrated. Bremer, Romero, and Dier wouldn’t replicate that on the left. Nor is he the ideal CCB going off our style last season. But a few things I’m very confident with if we sign him. He’ll be signed to start regularly, as he’s way too good not to. He is an elite pure defender, so it’s not like we’d be signing an average player. We’d be signing a great one. And I’m positive if we sign him Conte will have a plan to get the best out of him and the whole team, so I’m calm with whoever we sign in all positions.

Romero & Sanchez/Tanganga, Dier & Bremer, Davies & Lenglet. Decent upgrade, not elite, but improved, and for less than originally planned (meaning funds can be siphoned elsewhere). I could live with that, Lenglet gets a shot at showing he can still be the defender he was at Sevilla and that Barca was just a bad move for him. If it doesn’t work out (like Gollini) then he goes back to Barca and we try again in the LCB market next summer.

Going for the League is different gravy.

Exactly. Is Dier a title winning CCB in a back three? I think that is really debatable. I'm not saying he isn't, but he's only really had one good season at CB, last season. He certainly isn't world class. Conte may feel he's upgradeable.

The question is, can you improve on Dier by signing Bremer. If the answer is yes then you have to remove your sentimentality to the situation, as good as Dier has been for us recently.

Conte wants to win and if there’s an upgrade available for any of our players then you have to take it.

Time will tell if he is an upgrade.

Never got the narrative that Dier isn’t upgradeable, I mean Davies was also top class last season but there isn’t anyone saying Bastoni or Torres coming wouldn’t be good. if Dier is elite then he should welcome Bremer as a means to push his development further. This club won’t grow unless we have a elite squad not just an elite first 11

Conte has been quoted as saying that he believes Dier can become one of the best central defenders going. I don't think he sees him spending more time on the bench. If I was a gambling man, I'd be thinking more along the lines of Conte having a plan to develop Bremer's game (which, for all his talents, is reportedly not complete) as a LCB, with the ability to cover for Dier in the event of injury/suspension.

Honestly I agree with this, I believe he’ll take Davies spot and Conte will accept that he needs to adjust the system for Bremer’s lack of passing.

Bremer has good potential as a progressive carrier out of defence too, so Conte might lean on that strength rather than passing for progression in the LCB.

One of the names I was given that were progressing this morning ??

Having to be very careful with information currently as some names and deals are very sensitive.

By no means done but was told there was 'movement' on this one ?

He plays central in a 3 for Torino! The difference with the system is he is the aggressor from a central position with the other 2 CBS playing a covering role. It’s the opposite with us. Not sure where he will play in all honesty, his ball progression isn’t his best aspect. So playing him on his weak side seems like a bit much.

What if we are planning on trying Romero on the left and this dude on the right?

Dier is a strange one for me. Our defense was much improved at the end of the season but given his position he was a bit invisible for me.

The tearing hair out moments were gone but I also didn't notice him doing much outstanding. I really did forget he was out there much of the time. But I guess that can be a good thing for a defender.

I wonder if it was more down to him or the system.

When he was injured we definitely struggled so either way we definitely need competition for the place.

A similar theme is coming out in several transfer threads about who gets ‘dropped’ to make way for any potential signing. I just don’t think that’s how Conte is approaching the window. He’s obviously out to get the best players he can, but not necessarily as replacements or upgrades in every case. He’s trying to strengthen the squad as a whole and get away from the notion of a nominal XI + everyone else. I think Bremer fits that billing really well. He’s generally the centre of a 3 at Torino, so can alternate/compete with Dier, but could also play at RCB if Romero is rotated out or injured. He could probably also slot in to LCB if needs be too. In any scenario, the XI that starts a match is not impacted in a significantly negative way.
