Shame. I'd much prefer to have him over Emerson as back up, he's linked up well with Kulu when they've played and he's better on the ball.
I guess Conte wants to keep at least one RB that's stronger defensively. For all his limitations, I'd much rather bring on Royal late in a game to shore things up that Doc.

Can't see him getting much game time but working day in and day out with Simeone will definitely improve him defensively. Toby and Trippier both raved about how much he improved them so hopefully same for Doherty

Thats a really fun move for him. Huge club, amazing city (climate/food/culture) and another crazy defensive manager (anyone else worked with Jose, Conte AND Simeone?!)

I think he blew his chance to be honest. He had a great performance and then got a little run ahead of Emerson. He's gone back to being poor again. I'm just a bit surprised we leave ourselves with 2 wing backs each side now and 1 isn't really a natural wing back.
That injury fucked him, another casualty of a shitty ref who allowed hard tackles to go unpunished. He was in one of the best forms of his career too. He is too old to compete with 2 players, better to loan unhappy player even if the other one isn't the best fit for the system. If Conte persists with Royal moving in the midfield he can be very useful to us.

Doherty would always be the one out as in honesty he’s a poorer slower version of Porro. Having a more defensive option was gonna be the one kept. I think we should’ve kept him for the left mind you.
Agree on this part. But I thought Emerson would have benefited from a loan instead to escape the toxicity and come back refreshed hopefully while Doherty stays for this season rotating with Porro and then leave in the coming summer window. Purely also because he links up better with Kulu.

At Spurs he never quite got to the level he was at with Wolves and when he did show positive signs they often coincided with injury.

This is a good move for him and will allow him to return in 6 months time to find a midtable PL club. He seemed a great character in the squad too, so I am happy for him.

Shame to see Doc go, I always liked him but if you have a RWB in Pedro and a RB in Emerson (who can ‘cover’ RWB when asked) it makes sense to move Doc on, as he’s a RWB by trade and as we’ve seen, his RB and defensive duties aren’t as proficient.

A question though: Did this come out of nowhere as it seems, or was there any ITK about it? If the former just goes to show that the club ‘can’ operate in a vacuum when needed.

This makes a lot of sense to me, Conte now has two very different options available at RWB suited to different types of matches and match situations.

I believe Atletico panicked after failing to agree price for Jonathan Clauss.

Paratici is actually terrible at shifting deadwood. We have like 10 players coming back in June from a dry loan. Ffs
