Nketiah’s challenge on Vicario was a straighhr red for me all day, if that challenge was on an outfield player he is gone. Things so even themselves out IMO.
It was much worse than Jones' tackle.

But - when you go studs up, you are risking that your foot goes over the ball and into the opponents leg. Its reckless, given the potential for serious injury.

I don't feel bad for that call. It was not an intentionally bad tackle - but it was a reckless decision.

I agree - though it could be that Lo Celso and/or Bryan do something over the next few months to claim that spot. History suggests they won't - but nothing about this squad will surprise me this season.
I rate them both when fit but they’re never fucking fit. We can’t count on them or else we’ll continually find ourselves in the position we were in today, with no real impact subs available from the bench.

Bringing in another top-quality wide player would give us the cover that Perisic’s injury has deprived us of, and would also enable us to shift Kulu to the No. 8 position as an alternative to Maddison. Today we didn’t have that option.

For a large part of that match it felt like we were playing ourselves from the end of the 21/22 season. We clearly didn’t adjust well to the more counter attacking version of Pool and they could have grabbed it at the end of the first half. Second half we refocused defensively but in an attacking sense we looked blunt. One has to give Klopp and Pool credit tbh.

In general I don’t personally think we were good even taking into consideration the change in opposition tactics. Son aside I don’t particularly feel like any of our forwards are good enough BUT I do think Johnson (obviously) and Solomon need a run of games before making a judgement on them, same for Gil if he can prove himself in training. Still I think we could do with investing in a top quality player in a wide position. Richy as well I’m not convinced is ever going to be near the required level.

Im also incredibly concerned if Maddison or Son get injured for any prolonged period of time. If/when that happens it will certainly be a giant test for us.

On a side note I really want to see the lines on that VAR decision because if that was us getting a goal ruled out I’d be fuming.

Ultimately I think we didn’t play well and got lucky. It was a red on both occasions even if Jota’s first yellow was soft (so was Udogie’s) but the VAR decision was a little sus. But in the end of the day we got the win and that is what the best teams do. It might not always be pretty but you get the points no matter what. You make your own luck.

Now is the time to go back on the training pitch and work on what was missing from today.

Poor performance (by our standards), fantastic result, now on to the next match. We are only going to get better and better. COYS.

As I said earlier, I get that we don't train to play against 9 men, but we must train to play against two banks of four sitting deep. We'll get that loads of times this season. We need to have some ideas, tactics, even if it's just long range shots.
We are past where we expected to be at this juncture as Ange has said over and over again. At least we have the luxury of being considerably higher than any of us expected to be.

2 banks of four against a Burnley or Everton is different than again a top 10 side in the world? With probbably the best deferender in the world with arguably a top 4 manger in the world?

Spot on, there is no defending it. Intent means shit, you go into the kind of tackle you are leaving yourself open for it to happen.

Completely forgot about Lo Celso! 🤦‍♂️ we just can’t rely on him can we, he’s like Lamela Mk II. He and Gil would’ve been handy today against their 9 men.

Yea the linesman gave offside initially, so he made the first error. VAR just didn't fix it.
Before VAR the game was subject to the vagaries of human error. Since VAR was introduced absolutely nothing has changed. It’s an unreliable solution to a problem that cannot be fixed.

I don’t think either were intentional to be honest, but these days you simply can’t do it. Foot raised studs up ur off and rightfully so. We’re not in the 80s anymore.

Do you know what, fair play actually, I thought Klopp would be spitting feathers, but by his standards he’s basically just taken that.

Crap Manager for Valencia but Nev and J.Redknapp spot on that we needed the full backs to overlap more, Andros one of the best pundits I’ve heard too, hope sky keep him on long term.

Makes it worse G.Nev defending it, it was an awful tackle.
Most footballers who have spoken out about it say "not a red" (maybe by their standards from when they played), even Jermaine Defoe said not a red. I definitely think you CAN give it and that's on the player for giving VAR the opportunity.

It wasn't like we didn't try though. We kept going right to the end. A peculiar situation to find ourselves in but it came good.
