He'd played dm for sporting I believe

Well that fucks my argument then lol.

He didn't come to us wanting to be a defensive midfield though mind, Poch solidified that he could play that position and play it well on a consistent basis.

He didn't want to play for the England under 21s because he didn't want to play for them at fullback but wanted to concentrate at becoming a good centre back with us instead so missed games for them. If true about the central midfield thing then he needs to make up his mind.

Defender wants to focus on winning place as Spurs centre-half rather than play right-back for Gareth Southgate's team
Gareth Southgate has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier pulled out of England Under-21 duty after insisting he was not good enough to play right-back.

Dier asked to not be considered for the forthcoming double header after insisting that he wanted to improve his game and viewed his future as a centre-half, in a surprise move which has been backed by Southgate.

Star on Sunday reporting that we turned down £50m for him in January.

Would make sense in some ways, a possible reason why Poch was so reticent to leave him out the side at any stage. Keeping him sweet.

I reckon he's had a poor season. He was great last year but he made me nervous this

Agreed, but I think a lot of that is Wanyama coming in. Dire was great last season playing in the middle, but he can't go marauding around when playing at the back.

I think he's a top player, but I could actually see him being allowed to leave for United. At one point this season I think he was behind Dele, Dembele, Wanyama, and Winks for a CM position. Hope not as we need players like him in the team.

Didn't he score his only two goals this season playing from CM? I know his game isn't all about goals, but it's clear he offers us more playing there, and he knows it.

He's an incredibly valuable player, and I'd personally be gutted if he left.

Poor?

No one in the starting XI has been 'poor'. He's been a CB in the best defence in the league. I'm also pretty sure no one has started more games than him.

Completely agree. Because he doesn't have the standout factor of Toby and Jan, people automatically assume he's a weak link in our defence. It's bullshit.

I think he's a very talented player that with the right focus and experience could be very special, particularly at CB

Is he a £50m player today? No. But his potential is massive and the piece in all this that you can't value is the importance of the squad dynamic.

Walker wants to leave and goes - so be it, we'll move on.

But if we start selling several, young high profile England internationals, I think the vultures will circle. We need to be careful here

He's been poor compared to last season. Out of our first 11, him and Walker have been our weakest links when we've had one. I'm not even sure he makes our first 11 when everyone is fit.

I don't think that's his fault though. I think he's a great DM but a generally decent CB. Even so, he seemed to suffer in a DM role without Dele alongside him. Wanyama coming in caused him problems.

Dier is fine and I think he can improve a lot as a player. He will get better with age a little bit like Michael Carrick has imo.

Let's try and apply some common sense to not just Dier but all our players....

There are a number of clubs who would want not only our players but also to dismantle our team.

Dier is a young lad and when comparing him to two CBs who are in their prime and amoungst the best we've had for years and years, he is just short..... currently! But some on here thinking that's a reason to potentially sell.... that's crazy! Also he has not had a poor season..... non of our players in the starting 13/14 have!

He has all the potential and mental attributes to be a legend here.

On the flip side... our wage structure needs amending (if it's sustainable within the clubs finances.....I don't see why it wouldnt be now). Otherwise there will always be a key thing our competitors can offer our players that we can't! Double their money

I don't think anyone is saying we should sell Dier. It's more about the fact that the club could easily absorb the loss of him and Walker compared to other players we have. Ultimately it comes down to whether they want to leave.

If players are part of a team that finishes in the top three two years in a row but are only getting paid West Ham wages or worse, they will think about their options.

It's why Sissoko pisses me off so much. £30m worth of wages on good players who can actually play football, wasted on that joker.

In addition to being an excellent player in two positions, Dier's attitude is the epitome of the spirit Pochettino has instilled in the team. Any club attempting to sign him should be met with a swift 'fuck off'. Even countenancing the thought of selling Dier is mental.

Wanyama and Dier play the same role and I do not think either are as good when played together in CM. Dier is definitely in our first 11 when we play 3 at the back with everyone healthy. Right now, with the form Son is in, we basically have 8 starters for 7 places when you do not take into account GK or FBs. Dier is still young and improving. A lot of playing both DM and CB is based on experience in reading the game which is why so many of these players don't reach their peak until their mid 20's. I think we will be hard pressed to get someone to replace the tactical flexibility he provides because of his ability to play both positions. Maybe we could but it would probably eat up all of the transfer money we could get for him. Rather keep him myself.

Let's see how many Homer Simpsons you get for this. Personally, I think it's plausible.

If Walker goes, Dier is going nowhere.

No chance we will sell more than one first team we this window.

Poch loves Eric's tactical flexibility and has stated his importance so many times. I think he sees him as critical to how the team functions.

We would be mad to sell Dier.

His positional flexibility and awareness at a young age make him a very valuable asset so you can understand why the likes of Mourinho are interested. He is also a good leader in a team of leaders (which is why we have done so well recently) - a bit of a modern day Gary Mabbut if I was looking for a comparison.

Although this season he has not hit the heights of the previous season I think a lot of that is down to fatigue after playing virtually non stop for various England levels and ourselves for the last two years or so. After a good rest this summer I think he will be back to his best.

It might be that Mr Levy might have to think hard about giving out a few pay rises this summer.
