The thing is though is that being good in the transition is not just about athleticism. It is about being able to pass out from the back to launch counters, and carry the ball forward. Positioning is also crucially important. It just doesn;t make sense to me at all.
Haha yeah, i agree mate. I'm just trying to rationalise his comments in a way where i can say, 'Well yeah, I kinda get where he's coming from."

I'm struggling though.

I agree with Poch entirely. Clearly, Sissoko's a player we could improve on but until we do he performs an important function for the team. He forces turnovers; he keeps the ball for the most (albeit cumbersomely) and his strength and pace is an asset in transitions. His presence i gives us balance, allowing us to play Son, Alli, Kane and Eriksen and our full backs to push forward.

Maybe why Poch is a premier league manager and we're banging away on our keyboards.

For all those wondering why he's continually in the team, Pochettino hs addressed that question.

"You have to give the credit to him because he is the only player who provides balance in those transitions -- offensive to defensive, defensive to offensive -- in the team," Pochettino said.

"There is no other player in the team who can provide that. This is the best quality he provides to the team. The team needs that balance nowadays. He has been one of our most important players."

That's why I added that caveat. Just because i don't understand something, doesn't mean it isn't right.

I will add that the only teams in for Sissoko were us and Everton. So we can safely say that we were as good at judging a player as the currently unemployed Koeman.

It’s possible some of our fans don’t actually understand how Poch sets us up... :cautious:

Moussa is not going anywhere as I suspected, whether we like it or not, we can expect to see him still feature, even with further additions to the squad.

The whole article:

Poch: Why unique Sissoko is one of Spurs’ ‘most important’

Mauricio Pochettino has paid tribute to Tottenham’s unsung hero, Moussa Sissoko.

Sissoko has endured a difficult time in north London since joining from Newcastle in summer 2016.

He has started to establish himself as a regular first-team option this campaign, and Pochettino says he “can provide” something none of his other players are able to.

“You have to give the credit to him because he’s the only player who gives or provides balance in the team in those transitions – offensive to defensive, defensive to offensive,” he said.

“There is no other player in the team who can provide that. This is the best quality he’s providing to the team. He has been one of the most important players.

“Sometimes we all create myths. Most of the time we are not clinical or honest in the way we assess things. Football is interested in many different things.

“Sometimes you think a way about someone because of first impressions, and then they stick forever. I like that you give credit to him because he is doing very well.”

I can't argue with Poch there. There's been a few times where, when we're on the attack and we pass the ball to Sissoko, who then, after realising that there isn't a team mate ahead of him, inadvertently passes the ball to the opposition and turn our offensive mode into a defensive one.

I really don't want to be relying on Sissoko as a viable squad option.

At the moment he needs to be used but I really hope we improve our engine room and wide attacking positions to point where we can let him go.

Hopefully this is just Poch kidology as he needs to use him at the moment and also bump up his profile for a good price in the summer...

I can see what Poch means, but just because he can get half forward, then get half back, in out in out shank the ball about, I don’t think that offers enough.

What Poch should be doing is asking some of the other players to show the work rate and effort of Sissoko, rather than flagging it as the thing Sissoko brings to the team. We are better than one trick/stand out ability players

He might do, but he's hardly going to say it in a press conference.

If he goes anywhere in summer it’s because he decides to leave but we’ve given up ok selling him be he’s improved. If we improve the squad as we plan to him will really struggle for game time next season so then may decide to jump ship.

I get you. A team is all about balance, and Sissoko provides the shitness counter balance that allows us to play the good players.

So we might as well try and get behind him. Slagging him off all the time is hardly going to get him to play better.
