I think the tactics are OK but the intensity has just fallen off a cliff. Start of the season we were pressing the hell out of the opposition. Today we offered nothing and NUFC did exactly that to us. Their pressing energy kept us away from their ropey backline even though we had bags of possession, and when we got close they threw everything at us so we created next to nothing.

How do you press, particularly counter press, when you've got 8 players well in front of the ball and then lose it?

If we're going to play possession football, we need to slow down the build up, have some players behind the ball, pin teams back and learn how to play through in tight spaces.

I missed today, anyone able to give me a sensible, brief synopsis of what went wrong? Were we massively outplayed, unlucky, robbed by the ref, just plain shit?

Thanks
Massively outplayed unfortunately.

Newcastle pressed us to death when we went forwards and brutalised us on the counter. We were second best to every ball.

Also another set piece conceded, and we were incredibly fortunate not to concede more.

Even our most reliable players (VDV, Vicario) put in poor performances. VDV got sat down (literally) for two of the goals and was ball watching for a third. Vicarios distribution was poor, and he could have possibly swept their 3rd goal but ran back into his box instead.

Udogie and Porro have to take their share of the blame for the first and second goals.

Romero, Bissouma, Maddison, and Son would probably have had more impact if they were literal inanimate objects.

I wouldn't feel comfortable giving any of our players more than a 5 out of 10, and if I'm being completely honest, 5/10 for anyone on the pitch today would have been very generous.

Though the pundits were giving the ref plaudits for not giving out cards first half there should have been at least 3 yellows (2 Newcastle 1 for us), that would have kept Schar in check and he wouldn't have been able to go about like he did which had a big effect on the match.

I thought we were going to weather their pressure then Micky slipped and then costly error by Pedro. Credit to newcastles pressure. In all of our losses that's usually the difference tbh, it's the bare minimum we ask of them.

Everyone was poor but really was disappointed in Bissouma, slow on the ball, unaware of his surroundings and a few bad giveaways.

Also the first goal IMO comes from son/Madison overplaying - we really just need to take a shot sometimes
When Son/Madders messed up, I couldn't understand why Maddison ran towards Son! They were less than a few metres away from each other. It was silly movement.

We seem to jog a lot when we dont have the ball. Also, how long does it take Udogie to get back to LB position when we lose the ball? Porro seems to get back and Romero is rarely pulled out like VDV.

Just to add insult to injury, not only did Newcastle have 13 players out injured, this was apparently the first time their front 3 has played together all season.

We certainly need to stop coughing up possession so cheaply when we attack. It's been a problem for a while now where we give the ball away time after time. Unfortunately, we don't have a 'hold up' option at the moment.

I’m not calling for Ange out just yet, but I’m also not buying into this style of play. Sure we look great against poor teams but anyone half decent can shut us down. I will stick with it for now but no matter what players we bring in, if we want to challenge and win things, we are not gonna do it this way

Schooled by an injury ravaged side.

The first match this season I have questioned the tactics, you need to adapt, especially when things are not working.

We were at full force and showed nothing of notice.

Players? Manager? Don't know, but this is alarming.
Ok, it's an ongoing process, and lapses might occur, but that's not a lapse, it's a complete disaster.

Going forward I don't think this style of play can continue, we have four really good defenders but they're being exposed match after match. Its a game of who can run back the fastest to defend.

Do we need a physical presence up top, a proper no.9?
Ball bounces of son at times and when a defence is deep we have no dominant player in the air to contest anything.
There must be mobile strikers that can win a header in the box.

Humbled today. These St James humbling seem to happen quite alot with us.

We were terrible everywhere but son and Maddison were atrocious. Maddison really needs to focus on playing for Tottenham. What I've been seeing alot recently is the Maddison show, where he's getting involved in everything but the football.

It's not Ange, it's the players - a lazy excuse.
We had the same with conte.
Two managers not willing to adapt to what he has available and what's facing him. Square pegs and so on, we'll if you have only Square pegs, ply with them.

I have full faith in Ange, but he needs to be able to make adjustments depending on the opposition and the situation.

In other matches we have at least shown patches of good play, but today we were totally inept in creating anything.

We struggle to win headers in our own box, let alone theirs. As a side note was particularly unimpressed with Udogie’s efforts when defending corners, seemed to make a token attempts but with no intention of actually winning the ball.

Ange says we don’t need a set piece coach 🙄. Watching us today and many games before that I beg to differ . We look like we could concede from every set piece .
