How do you press, particularly counter press, when you've got 8 players well in front of the ball and then lose it?

If we're going to play possession football, we need to slow down the build up, have some players behind the ball, pin teams back and learn how to play through in tight spaces.
Agreed, I said the following after the Luton game.:
We're fluffing so many easy passes. Either a yard short or a yard behind where it needs to be. Biss makes a pass then walks a few yards, no interest in finding space for a return. When we do get possession, we try to get too many players forward too soon, we end up with our midfield and attack all in front of the ball, and our CBs in possession, trying to pick a through ball. Luton, and most other teams, try to keep the ball infront of or level with their players as they move forward, so there's always someone behind the ball to run past it. Simple tactics that we don't do.
We're playing shit football, deliberately.

I don’t think their keeper was ever in camera shot. Absolutely disgraceful performance. Are they leaving all of their energy on the training field? So lethargic. This is a 43 game season for gods sake. There should be bundles of energy left in them.

I think it's 41 game season - One more than the bare minimum

I’ve not seen replays but can anyone else let me know why we didn’t get a penalty today for Bentancur being kicked in the shoulder ?

Losing Kane has been an unmitigated disaster.

- Massive personality
- Fan favourite
- Creative
- Lethal finisher
- Offensively and Defensively aerially dominant
- Team player

Kane impacted the team at both ends of the pitch.

We’ve to date failed to replace all of the areas he once influenced. The fact that we’ve failed to even attempt to replace his goals is criminal
The early season euphoria kind of masked over the fact that losing maybe our greatest ever player at a time when he was still the best striker in the world might be a problem. But we had become too reliant on him, and these are the teething problems that happen when you've spent years building around your best player and basically nothing else.

Many bemoaning our lack of plan B.

But is our plan A working in the first place? We are as open as ever. One long ball cuts us like knive through melting butter..

Very concerning that some problems are becoming a bit familiar.

And on the back of Fulham just a couple of games ago, things need sorting. Very quickly.

I hope Ange can evolve as a manager but it wouldn't surprise me if Levy is already looking for a new manager that can play more than one system, someone that can implement in game changes as required. I wonder if the top 3 were playing this way how they would be doing. We moan a lot but each game seems like a rinse repeat.

Said it was outside the box but no replays were looked at in depth saying VAR is not concerned about outside the box

I would imagine that he isn't looking for anyone at the moment although this might be wishful thinking amongst some on here.

A long ball with enough space to play it can cut through any team.
The difference is that we used to be able to suffocate the opposition team and they didn't have the freedom to play the balls the same way they do now. It may be the physical fitness, it may be something else, but we're objectively not as aggressive or good as we were the first 10 games.

Newcastle had a good game plan against us. They pressed our fullback and then played long balls to the flanks. Low block + counter-attack is their plan A which happens to be optimal against a team like ours.
It's also a repeat of the 6-1 so we know that both teams are playing to type.
I dont see the lack of plan B as a problem because if your plan A wont work your plan B wouldn't either; this is real life not football manager.
Not every team specializes in this game plan (West Ham's the other one) so lets just forget it and move on.

Much as I like Ange, don't think any manager have ever succeeded in the PL with only one system in mind. In today's game, just as against Fulham, I knew we weren't going to get a result after only 10 minutes. The pace and fluidity of the Newcastle attack necessitate our sitting a little deeper. But we know that wasn't going to happen.

I missed today, anyone able to give me a sensible, brief synopsis of what went wrong? Were we massively outplayed, unlucky, robbed by the ref, just plain shit?

Thanks

Newcastle beat us with the tools we showed at the start of the season: high intensity, collective pressing high up the pitch. Won every (at least +90%) of all duels. And were much more distinctive and clinical with the ball in the final third.

We did some bad mistakes individually and collectively on especially the first two goals. But tbh they missed a few sitters.

They tore us apart, and we didn’t even show up for the fight.

Not one single player were close to their best. Son, our captain, had one of his worst ever games in a Spurs shirt. But he was not alone.

Genuinely this is AVB-Ball.
I’ve been saying this at every home game for a while. It is AVB mk 2. Neutrals call it entertaining football, personally it bores me to tears. I really want Ange to succeed but I just can’t understand the stubbornness in football now. When did it all become about ‘philosophies’ and ‘our football’. What’s wrong with mixing things up when it’s not going your way.

I’m back to the stage of just looking out for the result when the game is over rather than put myself through the pain of watching us. I thought that would stop after Conte left but looks like it’s back 😂 we really are a shambles.
How are you even a Spurs fan still after all these years, if you give up after a few bad results? 🤣

We're having a bit of a shit run but it won't last, we're at the start of a rebuilding process so it's not going to be sunshine and rainbows all the time.

Let's give Ange a bit of time and support before we just turn our backs on the club at the first hiccup.
