I didn't see the game but I'm going to guess that Newcastle exploited the space behind our fullbacks by setting up a mid block and pressing only when we entered their half.

I think Ange needs to find a way to prevent this space.from being exploited. If he's going to continue playing with inverted fullbacks high then the 6 needs to be able to sprint back between the CBs and allow them to split and close out the space where the fullbacks should be.

Agree.

But if you look at the display today it was not because one or two wasn't up to scratch.
We didn't create anything of notice, and shipped four goals.

I think it's more about looking for progress, and perhaps seeing a clear vision, today was a big step backwards. And that hurts.

I think Ange will be successful given time, but he needs to adapt in the meantime in order to not give such displays as the one we were given today.

And even when he reaches success he will need to adapt to make further progress.
It's not only a learning process for the players, it's a learning process for him. And today showed that he's a bit behind where he should be in that regard.
That's true but those 2 positions I highlighted are the gate to defensive solidity and creativity in attack.

If your 6 and 10 are on it, then you can expect to so well at both ends.

They may be suffering because players around them are not helping but I guarantee if you watch City and Rodri and Silva are on it, then they will be hugely influencing the pattern of the game.

Yes, City have better players around them, that helps but those players tend to make it easier for those around them.

For example, Van de Ven and Romero had bad games, but they can't keep getting exposed like they do because at some point, they'll have an off day. That's why a good 6 is important as they are quick to help out mostly.

How many times have we seen Bissouma slack and fail to go with a runner?

Maddison isn't dominating games the way he was earlier in the season.

If you keep losing possession, then it's putting pressure on others.

If those 2 positions stepped up, the others would likely have more space and stability to build on.

You mean like Eric Dier did with Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld in the early Poch days.

Porro was awful today. But the speed we came out of defence was the reason we struggled. We didn’t turn them at alll we waited for them to get back into position. And the. Tried to break them down. We didn’t turn them
Once. Because the goalie and the defence. Made it easy for them.

Got to cut out the sloppy mistakes for next season. Far, far too often one of our players is caught out on the ball, outmuscled, or just makes an absolutely woeful decision and it costs us a goal.

it’s not just a couple, not even a few, but far too many for our team with our aspirations.

First goal a prime example - we capitalise on the opponents making an error in a dangerous position, then son is poor with possession, Udogie gets outmuscled , Romero’s positioning is a bit panicky, and VdV falls over

To give up a second so soon after from a Porro aberration, underlines the need to take our defensive responsibilities more seriously

The biggest worry continues to be . I’d why are we so open at the bac game after game ??

even in games we have won we could easily have conceded more goals . Bournemouth, Everton, palace , even Luton .

the 1st half’s of pretty much all the games we seem to play now . We don’t wake up until the 2nd half ! So surely that is down to bad preparation and man management.

worrying trend happening here . When was the last time we played well for 90 minutes.? Against good opposition, we seem to get undone badly .

with Arsenal, Chelsea , city Liverpool still to play . It’s a big worry

Still agree. But where is our answer when the 6 and the 10 is not up to scratch?
With both fullbacks tucked in and we are basically 2-1-7 in attack/transition we are very vulnerable, and Newcastle exploited this.
We are in a position where we need all 11 to be 100% all the time, no other team needs that. That's where I think we are too naive.

We have had poor games earlier, and good games we have lost. In all those games we have showed some sort of intent, today we showed none. That is my main grip. If we had lost 4-0, and thinking we might should have had a couple of goals, fine. But today 4-0 was a fair result, we didn't show up at all, and did not show any evidence of having progressed as a team.

Need a very disciplined 6 - who reads the game well. That would help the CBs immensely.

Oh, and stop giving the ball away cheaply...

Yes. Adding the goals we have this season in addition to his and now you're cooking, even with the piss poor defending and set pieces. As is, we've managed to maybe tread water. Still fairly impressive but one step forwards, one step backwards by the club as per.

I’m sure with Kane we would have conceded less goals too as he was excellent at defending corners. Without him we’re very vulnerable from both corners and free kicks as outside of our two centre backs and may be Udogie, everyone else is soft as shit and woeful in the air.

Part of me wonders/worries if it's Vicario not taking leadership or asserting authority the way Lloris used to do. He looks very, very nervy at corners.

Nah they were all over us everywhere for long periods of the match, only really dropping off later in the halves to conserve energy. Set out to chase down & harass from the first minute and it worked a treat, we totally failed to find any rhythm or patterns of play. Even when they did sit back we were just static and had no ideas, saw a good bit of horseshoe-ing like bad days under Conte.

Very concerning that some problems are becoming a bit familiar.

And on the back of Fulham just a couple of games ago, things need sorting. Very quickly.

We set up like a team that’s a goal down with a few minutes to go except in our case we do this from the off, it’s absolutely woeful

Great points but also the WF and ST are pivotal, if the ST can't hold the ball up and isn't a threat and one or both of the WF's are ineffective then the ball keeps coming back on transition to the defence.

I think the tactics are OK but the intensity has just fallen off a cliff. Start of the season we were pressing the hell out of the opposition. Today we offered nothing and NUFC did exactly that to us.

This.

The ponderous play gave them the opportunity to get back in position. And I get that Ange wants to give our attackers the freedom, but not sure they have the vision or flair to be able to do that.

No one can hold on to the ball. We lose it constantly and the opposition know when they win it back all they have to do is hit it long and they’ll likely have a 2 vs 2 situation.

Needs better players in the summer who can pass and retain the ball, and until then some tactical tweaks to ensure we have adequate cover when the lads up front start messing around.

Hugo was a leader but he didn’t dominate his penalty area from corners either.

In Vicario’s defence I’ve only seen on a couple of occasions where our players have tried to put themselves between Vicario and the opposition. The rest of the time he’s just been left to fend for himself. What’s our defensive coach teaching these players? not a lot by the looks of it

I'm still staggered by how Isak was just left to roam free - dude was like a ghost to our defenders, every time the ball was played up field, there he was, on his own in acres of space right in the middle of the field!

Yes, terrific striker, he's a menace and will be a thorn in the side of a lot of teams but for about half an hour in the first half he had zero problems finding plenty of room on the edge of the D. So frustrating to watch.

Yep.
But in possession is seriously worrying me right now. Earlier in the season we were taking risks, playing round the press and making angles.
Today (& Fulham) was horrible. Nervous, slow, hospital passes from the back that invariably gave the ball back to the oppo within seconds.

We’ve sort of accepted we’ll concede goals but the flip side was we’ll score a helluva lot. Right now, we look more open than ever at the back but somehow much weaker offensively.
