It is diving, it's just that it has become an accepted element in the game now that everybody has learned to live with. Might as well do away with the yellow card for simulation since the waters are so muddied now.

But it isn't diving if the opponent crazy defender actually fouls you. It's diving if the opponent defender plaid it straight and you fall to the ground regardless.

I don't think you've understood what Carragher is referring to. It's more the ways that Kane draws fouls be being strong on the ball - like when he takes it into the corner and they are so desperate and scrappy to get the ball back, they foul him.

That's no where neat any definition of diving. I'm not sure what aspect/incidents you're referring to.

My point was that diving in most aspects of the game has become acceptable. Harry is very 'cute' in the way he creates situations that win free kicks. A lot of the time those are legitimate fouls, but I think it's a shame when people say 'if you don't go over you don't get the foul' or 'if he'd have gone over that would have been a penalty'. I don't like it and never will.

There's a clear difference between diving and winning fouls though.

I agree that you shouldn't have to exaggerate contact to win a foul, but I think it's become necessary because of the officiating.

You have to blame the refereeing for allowing it to get like that

Fully agree here. You can be fouled, stay on your feet and not given anything countless times if you don't also 'act' like you've been fouled. It's become necessary and not doing so is part of the package of being 'too nice'.

Very clear.

Putting yourself into a position that means the defender takes you out is mostly what Kane does. And now some people are suggesting, because he's so good at it, that it's in some way cheating. I mean, if that's cheating, you may as well give up and go home – all the best strikers throughout the years have made this a cornerstone of their play.

Diving is leaping to the ground with no contact, which is very rarely what Kane does. If at all.

This is all about what Mourinho wants. Play clever, play the game how you need it but within the rules.
And I think we really excelled at that against City. We took our time for throw ins, blocked free kicks or kicked the ball a bit away to have time to regroup and not get surprised, do a tactical little foul to break up play, look for easy fouls to win another 30 seconds....
All the frustrating stuff the winning teams like prime Chelsea or prime United had in their locker to seal the three points.

Absolutely. Iremember probably back in the 70s when English teams in Europe and out International team quite blatantly adopted an attitude of 'if you can't beat'em, join 'em' with regard to diving, feigning injury, exaggerating the amount of contact and all that sort of stuff. We were definitely getting left behind but have now caught up. I fully agree that officiating has played a big part in what goes on now and is also shamefully inconsistent at times. I do though miss the days when a penalty was given for an actual foul as opposed to a miniscule bit of contact and an elaborate, theatrical collapse to draw the Ref's attention to it.

Kane is like Shearer. Knows and uses all the dirty tricks, and of course Mourinho knows a few more as we have seen in the past with his teams against us. Sad but that is the world of 2020
