36 years ago today Spurs lifted the UEFA Cup
with a draw in the 2nd leg at WHL.

We did the business at Molyneux earlier.

Great night.
Spurs 1 Wolverhampton Wanderers 1 UEFA CUP FINAL (2nd Leg) Although ahead from the first game, this was a close, hard fought game. Playing their 68th competitive game, Spurs were drained but Alan Mullery increased their lead in the 29th minute when he threw himself full-length to head in a Peters free-kick, injuring himself in the process. However, he was able to continue and although Wolves equalised before half-time, they were unable to gain the ascendancy and threaten Spurs overall lead. Alan Mullery went on to lift the trophy to give Spurs their second European trophy, the first British club to achieve that. It was to be his final competitive game for Spurs and while the rest of the weary squad retreated to the dressing rooms, he completed his own personal lap of honour surrounded by the jubilant fans.

Team: Jennings; Kinnear, Knowles: Mullery (Captain), England, Beal; Gilzean, Perryman, Chivers, Peters, Coates.

Note 68th game of season - I saw most of the games

Edit - got this info from "Topspurs"

That was without the luxury of a rotation/squad system.

What we had-we played, the unsung heroes of that time were not able to get
5 star treatment, or massive cash incentives.

Players like Terry Naylor who left the club and went on to be a Post Office mail sorter
down at Mount Pleasant in London EC.

Different strokes for different folks.

went to both legs of that final - big Chiv's goals were awesome at Molineux - we had a massive stand behind a goal - I think Chiv's long range rocket flew in at that end but may be wrong

amazing atmosphere and great journey back

we only just held for the second leg and Jennings was outstanding

happy days

I think I got back just in time to see the highlights on TV again (unbelievably I don't it was live that year -two English clubs in a European final and not even live on TV (I might be wrong about that too - it's all from memory - and while it's still good it's not 100% :)

in many ways even worse was the scandalous coverage of our away epic in the San siro - I was at the first leg of the semi v Milan - didn't make Italy for the second and I think the only TV coverage was a couple of mins on football focus or its equivalent on Sat morning - compared to the over kill now - Spurs knocking AC Milan out in a euro semi and the TV people barely blinked

I was at the first leg at Wolves with a mate - we were from Brum. Two great goals from Big Chiv!

Wolves, free kick from Hibbet while the wall was being organised - sneaky bastards! (Of course Greavsie never did anything like that!)

If memory serves, train fare to and from Brum 30p, programme 10p and entrance 20p at the turnstyle - we just turned up. (OK we were over 12, but not buy that much! We should have paid 40p!)

:hello:

Happier, well at least cheaper ,times.

(To the tune of Chicory Tips 'Son of My Father':_

"Oh Alan, Alan,
Alan, Alan Mullery"!

Yeah paid on the gate, in the massive away end.. was it called the South Bank ?

Completely full of Spurs fan and rocking the place down.

I was sweet sixteen and didn't leave school until a month later.

The trains were rammed but worth it. I think the fare was £1.50 or something.

Great night.

I only managed the second (home) leg. Great night. Alan Mullery was my favourite at that time and it turned out to be his last game for us.

Woah! Just seen we'll be firing up the old Milan rivalry again next season!

On another note, we rarely seem to beat SERIOUSLY BIG teams in Europe, no? Milan seem to be the team of note. Here's a good site to look at Tottenham's European history:

A pretty good find I thought!

Hi Miles :) A great find - brought back some memories :)

for example I went to Cologne and I think that was their first ever home defeat in Europe (as usual from memory - may be wrong)

I take your point about the seriously big teams

here's some of the ones we've beaten

Bayern

Ajax

Feyenoord

AC Milan

all european champions

Porto too - not so big I grant

were Red Star/Steau Bucharest euro Champs too? - and we've beaten them? mmm i'll check on steau - maybe it was dinamo

EDIT - yep Red Star won EC - and we beat them - I was there for the home leg - what a goal by Gilzean that niht - think it was Gilly finished off a move that flowed from one end of the pitch to the other

Looks like we haven't beaten Steau though

I should also mention that we've beaten the world's most succesful team - Rangers - sorry couldn't resist that from a thread in general football :)

but it's true a lot we've fallen short a lot too

Man U - so unlucky - 2-0 up then Mackay, perhaps our key player, gets his leg broken - in what was apparently a bad tackle (I've never seen it so can't comment) - no subs our 10 men get done 4-1 - very harsh

Benfica - the saga of Greavesie's 3 'offside goals' - very harsh

Pool (lose on away goals - I was at that game) - harsh

Barcelona semi - (at that game too - Barcelona absolutely brutal cynical and appalling should have been down to 9 men long before the end of the game - the most shameful display in any European game involving us I've ever seen - very very very harsh - I'm still fuming about it as I write

I was sadly there to experience it!

Glad that it brought back some memories. Having members that actually saw European Silverware adorned in white and blue gives the site a bit of credibility! :)

I didn't actually realise we had beaten Bayern and it was interesting to get mini-match reports from the games we lost. Add PSV on penalties to that and we've been a tad unlucky in Europe. Really hope we get Milan this year - I've just put up a thread with the seeds for next season's competition.

:) Miles - yep so nearly another European Cup winner scalp in PSV

I was at the Bayern second (home) leg when we nicked a late winner - Hod free kick - Falco - magic :)

my european memories go right back to those magic nights of 62 - alas only on black and whie TV - the Benfica game was the first spurs game tha broke my heart - I'm still hurting over it now :)

I was lucky enough to have SEEN all of our Euro home ties on 'Radio'....(or in person). I was 'just' too young to have paid much attention to the early 60's team....but we made up for it in the later 60's and 70's periods.
As all of my 'elder' Yido comrads can attest....we were the Man Utd/Pool/Chelski of our era (only better). I knew no better, as a young lad and why would I ever doubt Sir Bill's mastery lol? We come from a rare stock....and nobody can take that away from us....SEE History to confirm! COYS!

Amazing to think that we were all there that night, not knowing anything about each other and here we are now, still spouting shite and still not knowing 'much' about each other.
Singing 'The Mighty Chiv' song over and over again is one of my fondest memories of that away game. And the fact that I got to snog a really good looking woman, (some years older than me at the time) all the way home on the coach.

I'm so jealous of all of you who were there and around to see all the glory, being born in 1990, we won the FA cup when i was 8months, the League cup when I was 8 and again this year now I'm 17. Hardly "glorious"
