interesting topic, something which has come a cropper in my mind about potential changes next season; think a formation change can onli bode well! look at the top 4 united play 4-2-3-1 chelsea 4-1-2-2-1 liverpool 4-4-1-1 arsenal 4-5-1/4-4-2 ish
this surely shows that 441 is on the way out! confident ramos has the tactical nous to change from 4-4-2 n the acquisition of modric may be a pointer to this as im not playing him newhere n 4-4-2 will get the best out of him

Call me old-fashioned, but 3-3-4 is surely the way to go. Back to the future!

Seriously, until we get to August and have—hopefully—all our new signings in place, it's a pretty pointless debate. Apart from Modric we have no idea of who's going to be in, and, aside from the obvious suspects, only a slightly better one of who's going to be out.

When was 441 ever in? If Ramos ever picks a 441, he should be sacked on the spot.

 but you never know with Ramos.. was it at Santander or something that he took one of, without sending on in.. because he thought the team weren't trying hard enough during their 2-0 lead...

OK, Diarra has this morning ruled himself out... Gareth Barry has entered the frame (not that I think we stand a chance of his signature), but could he play in this formation?

I don't see an obvious position for him. I believe he has played DM before, but it seems a slight misfit... Watcha think?

with the current set up 4-2-3-1 requires at least 5 purchases. the team should resemble something like this

amelia

hutton king woodgate bale

hudd veloso

arshavin keane modric

berbatov

the gk position is solidified with amelia/robinson providing competitiveness. alnwick as back up.

defensively, assuming a king recovery, the backline represents one of the best in the league. bring in one good cb and stick with kaboul as cover.

the first tier of the engine room should be represented by hudd and veloso. veloso, whom i haven t had the pleasure of watching, is by all accounts a tenacious, classy , ball winning mid. hudd is still developing and provides a different option with his ability to hold the ball and to supply quality passes. no doubt his call up should imbue him with more confidence and assertiveness. where he errs defensively, veloso will mop up.

the attacking tier reflects workrate, versatility, skill, penetration, finishing, creativity and, dare i say, ingenuity. each of the three can interchange during a game and can in moments of sheer brilliance influence the outcome. they would present a challenge to man to man marking or double teaming and are sufficiently mobile to assist defensively when out of possession.

berba is the favourite for the lone forward spot. excepting workrate, he encapsulates everything about the ideal forward. if he decides to move, bent can step in. with that trio behind him, he can have no excuses for failure. if he can t hack it, he s off in the jan transfer window.

six class players amelia, jarque, veloso, arshavin, modric, swedish striker in french league/forgot his name in the summer.

retain gk robinson/alnwick defence gunter, kaboul, gilberto, def mid o hara zokora att mid jenas, lennon, malbranque and kpb forward swede striker

above leaves us with a senior squad of 24, incorporating class, premiership experience/ability. to supporters advocating flexibilty towards young uns, opportunities are made available to youngsters like tarrabt, a henville, rose. peckhart, berchiche etc.

sell staltieri,a ekotto, y-pyo, gardner, ghaly, rocha, tainio, dawson, chimbonda.
