I was at a Legends night up in Bolton on Friday night hosted by Darren Anderton and Micky Hazard, and I asked when the club were going to recognise Darren's contribution to the club (12 years, still the record holder for most Premier League appearances for Spurs etc) and give him a proper testimonial game.

Micky Hazard said the way to get this to happen was for the fans to get on board and let the club know. Another guy in the North West Supporters Club has set up this petition, which will hopefully be the first step. Once we have a load of signatures, our supporters club will send a letter out to the club and Daniel Levy on letter headed paper to hopefully make the club aware of the support for this testimonial among the fans. We're just shy of 1000 signatures over the course of the weekend, hopefully we can push that number up a lot over this week. We're also sharing it amongst some of the other regional supporters clubs to get support there.

Link to the petition is here:

And now to spend the next 10 mins going through your reddit post history........

One of the bright sparks in a time of rank mediocrity for us. He may have been cursed by injury, but whenever he got fit he made a huge difference to the team. He was an utterly sublime footballer on his day.

I'd also argue that a fit Darren Anderton would push for a place in the current team. He'd be right up MoPo's street. Hard working, versatile, and had all the skills.

Woah. I could have sworn that he did have one back in the day. Strange that he didn't.

Bizarre that for one so injury prone, he managed to play on until very late 30s.

Was my favourite player in that period. Such a sweet right foot and the only guy whose delivery could be consistently as good as Beckhams

Great right foot, shooting, passing vision all top notch. Before the injuries had great stamina and enough pace to get in behind and score goals. After the injuries was a decent playmaker from the right or center. Had a great understanding with Teddy.
Would have been better then Beckham if not for his hernia.

How good was he? I just remember him in the late 90s as a half decent player nothing more. :(

Worth remembering that he was first choice for England at Euro 1996 and WC 1998 despite his injuries in that period, and despite England having a lot of options in midfield at the time (Beckham, McManaman, Gazza, Platt and Scholes to name a few).

Signed. Another great footballer who looks like he shouldn't be playing football.

The reason he was at Spurs for twelve years, mate, is because he turned down Fergie halfway through his stay. What would you rather have, a guy injured through no fault of his own, or someone playing that long uninjured and truly not giving a shit about the club?

I remember the rumours about him going to Man Utd in the 90s but I find it hard to believe that he'd have turned down a move if we'd accepted a bid. Wonder how things would have turned out - by all accounts our medical department in the 90s and early 00s were shocking and aggravated a lot of injuries from rushing players back too quickly (think Ferdinand, Iversen and Scales too). There's a good chance Beckham wouldn't have come through if Anderton had taken the RW spot at Man Utd, at least not as quickly as he did - Anderton's goalscoring record for England was far superior. I did really enjoy them both playing together under Hoddle during the 98 World Cup though.

Before even getting a new manager in, Levy told Anderton he wasn't getting an extension even though he wanted to stay, because he was going to renew Jamie Redknapp's contract even though he'd been constantly injured ever since he signed. And that was it, no testimonial, no final run out in the last game of the season to say goodbye to the fans, 12 years of service and he was effectively sacked at the end of it and chucked out the back door. Was a shame.

That being said, I do remember the Spurs crowd waving bank notes at him once....

Loved Anderton. He might have been one person at the club for 12 years but he was like a new signing every 10 months.
