Unfortunately though he is a midget so would get bullied. He tracks back and sometimes manages to pinch the ball away, this doesn't make him a defender.

He needs competition to kick him up the arse. Hopefully Lamela will provide this.

It was just a suggestion as a possible backup for when we have injuries, like with Walker. In fact hes not actually much smaller than Naughton and is much stronger too. I think he would work better with our high line as both Rose and Naughton often get caught upfield and Lennon is left to chase the opposition player back.

There's plenty of wingers who have gone back slightly; Kolorov, Richardson, Valencia. In regards to size , well Roberto Carlos and Lizarazu were both very small (off the top of my head) and so is Jordi Alba.

But I can't be bothered to argue because I don't know if it would work was just a suggestion in light of our current right back issue.

If you have a guaranteed place in the starting lineup for a decade without having to improve your game, you probably won't. Easy as that. He's had it too comfortable and it's now too late to change it.

He's there because of his defensive work, which he does a lots of. And Tim has also pointed that out. Too me it sound a bit like when Harry justified Crouch performances by pointing out how important he is in defense. Not that defensive work isn't important for attacking players, it sure it, but that should not be main criteria for playing them.

See in previous seasons I would have agreed with you but I dont even notice him helping out in defence anymore.

Sorry, you have failed to sway me. He can go.

That shouldn't be a justifiable reason to play him. The only real positive I can give for the boy is that he's very good at tracking back but that's an ability that, albeit very handy in a wide player, shouldn't be the main reason for being selected. He offers very little otherwise, doesn't take players on and cannot cross a ball. He goes on little mazy runs but doesn't have the brains to slot in a pass or open up space with it. Very disappointing.

I can accept playing him at the moment due to injuries and not having a plethora of options on the wings but in the summer he needs to move on with his career. He's done everything he can for us, and vice versa.

I agree. He's only effective on counter attacks, when given space. He's very easily knocked off the ball in tight situtions, not just because of his size but mainly because of his poor ball control/dribbling skills.
And, as you pointed out, his passing, eye for a key pass and crosses are poor.

Lennon is winding down, but Id love to keep him until his playing days are done. I disagree that Townshend is a better option, but Lamela may be if he is ever fit again.

I'm interested, why would you 'love to keep him?' I'm completely baffled as to how/why anyone can continue justify his inclusion with his utterly below-par output. One goal and one assist all season from over 20 starts?! And this is hardly a blip- his stats have ben similarly underwhelming since about 2009/10. He has contributed nothing of note for years! I know there is some sentimental attachment to Lennon as he's been a loyal servant over many years but he offers absolutely nothing to our team and IMO it would be inexplicable to persist with him

Because Id like to see him finish his time at Spurs. He's been a dedicated servant. I suspect he'd be willing to take a spot on the bench, and might be a useful squad player in that role. I think Townshend is vastly over-rated in some quarters, and also has a solitary goal in the league this year.

He looks stale. I'd rather the new manager concentrates on getting the best out of the other wide players especially Lamela, Townsend and Chadli.

For the right price I don't mind seeing him go either. Besides, he's spent 10years at the club and many players (not all) stagnates are such a long time at just one club.
I haven't seen all Spurs' games (though I have seen most of them, albeit on flimsy streams) but in those I have seen him - particularly under Andre - he seem to be doing his share of back tracking. But, his my task is to be an threat offensively and it seem defenders know how to stop him now.

Agree with you regarding Townsend but I still vastly prefer him to Lennon- at least Townsend flirts with the idea of being vaguely threatening to the opposition defence and gets into dangerous positions before invariably f**king things up. Lennon doesn't even entertain the notion of causing the opposition problems- his lack of output is actually comical at this stage. I appreciate the sentimental connection to a long serving player but this guy is paid upwards of £50,000 a week and he is not even coming close to justifying that outlay. He is stealing a living. I would be delighted to see him sold ASAP but somehow doubt he will have many clubs fighting over his signature...

His stats from today's game...

1 successful dribble
3 times dispossessed (most in the team)
14 passes (least of the starting XI)
2 crosses (Townsend put in 2, Naughton 4 and Eriksen 14)

Ineffectual

The last time he had to up his game was when Bentley signed. What's that, six years ago this summer? He showed real improvement that season but has never had his place threatened since.

Lennon has never taken his game to another level and he will never will.

He upped his game when we signed Routledge and upped his game when Commoli brought in Bentley.

His play has become so predictable that England are not even interested in his services any more. I think he's quite content plodding along at Spurs on a very decent wage.

I think he's now hit the Jenas effect, one great game every 7-8 games and everyone forgets about the 7-8 average ones, but now people are cottoning on.

He always wants to go round the outside of players by using the outside of his right foot, it's so predictable and every left back in the country knows this to the point where a cross won't hurt either. His crossing hasn't improved at all down the years, people will argue it has but it's always been pretty much the same. He barely looks up when he crosses it, that's if he can even beat the first man.

You only have to look at Adam Johnson another winger who is on the outskirts of a world cup place busting a gut to impress Hodgson, I don't see that at all with Lennon

Lennon hasn't improved in years and years. He had a lot of promise once, but clearly he has plateau'd, and contributes very little offensively. Yes he tracks back, but if that's all he does, we may as well play a fullback there. He gets few assists and almost no goals, his movement off the ball is awful, and now he has a stupid looking beard too.

Honest opinion? He's nowhere near good enough. Don't see what he contributes, and don't see what he does to deserve a starting place each game.

I love him for what he has done in the past, but sadly I don't think he's even good enough for anything above a relegation battle team.

Don't turn around now
You're not welcome any more.

Melt him down and mould him into a bog to be used in the new stadium. That's the best use we'll get out of him from here on in.
