At the end of the day, I seem to remember that Dembele had only ever had a couple of really memorable performances when we signed him. Remember people being stunned by how much we paid at the time.

Oh goody. Sounds like our window is going swell then :rolleyes:
Indeed!
What has happened to our statement signing?
Really can’t imagine these players are the ones ITK’s we’re getting excited about earlier in window/close season! (Not knocking ITK by BTW)

Fuck it, I’ll take Gomes. We’ve got nobody bar Winks who can pass well. If it’s him or nobody or another pure DM then I’ll take him

If you have a look at the Dembele thread you'll see for yourself what people thought of him back in 2014 ... The fickle nature of being a fan I suppose.

I understand the concerns on simply buying 'moneybag' type signings because you will always get mixed results and it doesn't give the impression that we are going for the title. But what if we operate with a few 'moneybag' types and one special 'Bale' type, would people be happier then?

We have to remember that this club has always operated on these kind of signings, some work out great, some not so much and I don't think we are in a position to do something such as;
50m CM
60m AM/ST/WF
50m CB

So we have to get creative with some of our options...and we've been told this.

No issue with people feeling underwhelmed with the links, I do wonder though that if, 'if', these players are players that Poch wants then surely that is all that matters?

I'm aware that some of the players that Poch has earmarked/wanted may not have worked out or been to the liking of the fans, but one of the many demands/cries has been to back the manager.

If Gomes, Grealish or Barrios are the player(s) he wants then I guess that's all that matters in the long run.

Poch wanted Sissoko. I worry sometimes about his choices.

@rossdapep is exactly right.

Signing Gomes and the Colombian chap, for probably the same as we can get for just Wanyama, will leave the pot fuller for Martial, and/or whoever else in the £50m odd demi-elite pool, we can have a nibble on this summer.

Our scouting and potential signings already reek of desperation.
How so? We've been tracking Gomes for a long time, if we were desperate we'd be running around offering silly money for players who hadn't really been on our radar.

Trust Poch, he's got us this far.

Hasn't been the greatest signing but after seeing him for France in the Euros I can see why he wanted him.

He wanted a player who was going to carry the ball and help us transition from defence to attack, and to be fair to Sissoko he does that and you can't really knock his work ethic. He hasn't let us down when given certain instructions.

It's his inability to do a lot of other things and the fact he cost 30m that have put this one under more scrutiny.

Gomes can do this in small bursts except he can actually pick a pass.

How is it desperate? We're not scrabbling round at the end of a transfer window?
I just dont see how a columbian with no experience of playing in europe is going to come in and hit the ground running.will need at least a year. As for gomes he came out and said he had fallen out of love with football so hardly motivated and not the sort of character than is likely to run through a wall for poch.both are at best gambles.hardly proven players when all we hear is how we are competing with the other top london team for players and want a realistic shot at challenging for the league.you ask yourself honestly if either of these are likely to do that?

See Vertonghen and Dembele.

Poch can work wonders with a players mental state.

So what you mean is, you don't rate the players.

Word was his agent was whoring him around everywhere trying to find him a new club - don't think we'd be particularly interested if it wasn't for the fact he's constantly being pushed our way...

Not quite what i was saying, in terms of barrios i havent seen him play and he could become a revelation but as i said its a gamble with very few players coming direct from south america and at the very least needing lots of time to adapt. As for gomes football wise he has decent ability but i'd worry about him mentaly coping with the physical demands of the prem. Both could turn out to be good buys but both would be a gamble.if we have 100m to spend id like to think there were better options of players you could be confident would come in and be likely to be a first 11 player.if for example poch is only giving us a year and then off if we dont win anything then i would want to see players more ready to drop straight in to the side.

His agent is just doing his job and getting him out of a situation which is clearly having an effect on him. And how do you know he's continuously whoring him to us? And if he is maybe it's because we previously asked about his availability?

There's plenty of top talented prospects that have made a move and looked lost, low on confidence and appear to be missing that ability only for them to move to another club and turned into a huge success.

Salah & KDB off the top of my head.

If we're gonna spend big on one player, my preference is to go for a CM rather than another attacker.

That said, I'm not against signing Gomes. I was one of the few on here advocating signing him last summer.

Just depends what his role is. If he's replacing Dembele, I think that's unwise. However as a replacement for Sissoko I'm totally on board.
