Some positive stuff to break away from the negative stuff going on.
With Danny Rose hopefully returning and Kaboul hopefully over his injury woes, what happens to the back four.
The back four have been pretty good when verts moved over to lb anyway.
Our record has been excellent.
So how do we line up with everyone back?
Nice problem to have.
So whos your preferred line up then?
EPL only games please.
Me?
Well, Walker Verts, Chiri, Rose
Because i like ball playing CBs and i think these players fit the bill.

Hate to be negative but in terms of the defence record I think it has less to do with our defence and more to do with the fact we have Sandro and Dembele/Paulinho sitting in front of them. Also so far we have had the best keeper so far this season playing for us.(also been lucky that Lloris has made clangers for the NT and not us this season)

Anyway we all know it will be in 2 months time(touch wood):
Rose Vertonghen Kaboul Walker

Once that is in place, I think we would be among the best back 5's in the league

I don't think you can say the defensive record is purely because of the DMs and keeper. I think we like to over analyse our players' weaknesses, but the back four have been very good all-in-all.

I know this is pedantic, but if we were to use your line-up, it would be Jan next to Rose and Vlad next to Walker due to footed-ness.

If Kaboul is over his injury worries, the back line picks itself.
Walker - Kaboul - Vertonghen - Rose

Kaboul might not be be doing fake shot rabona 360 no-scope twists in our on box but he's still comfortable on the ball, and someone to aim for with our corners. Walker and Rose provide width and speed down the sides, and Verts is again, comfy on the ball.

And for those saying our defence isn't all it's cracked up to be, we got hammered by Everton in the second half, with arguably our worst two centre backs playing and our first choice left-back out. We had one no holding midfielders in Dembélé, so you can't say they helped, and Everton didn't make too many chances, and bear in mind that Martinez's Wigan beat us last year, and Everton basically always win at home. And we got a clean sheet.

Can't we keep Vertonghen at LB?

I know he's said that he wants to play CB, but he's the best LB we've got, in my opinion plays better there than in the centre, and he really seemed to be enjoying himself on Sunday.

Against pace it can be a problem. He's played at LB a couple of times now and a few times he's been done by pace. This was one of his best games at LB. Others have been not so good. I don't know if it was because he knew he had Lennon ahead of him, who will always help cover and was fast enough to keep Coleman worried, or whether he'd played with Mirallas enough with Belgium to know how he played and keep him in his pocket, but I think he's better at CB. That sentence was far too long. Maybe he just had a very good game. I think the fact that Vlad has done well immediately might mean AVB keeps Jan at LB until Rose is back though. Having said that, Rose is obviously dead so I guess it will have to be Jan.

I agree but I think it has a combination of that the players and the fact we always win the possession

No, he was the best CB in the league last year. He makes it very clear he see himself as a CB, I don't want him to leave because we force him to play LB. he is decent at LB though.

This is a real dilemma though cos Vlad looks the real deal. I would still go:

Rose jan Kaboul walker

Perfect central pairing. Vlad and daws are top quality backups.

The defensive performance on Sunday, was one of the best overall defensive performances I have seen from a Spurs team for a long time. Before we have just had King being imperious on his own.

The defence as a whole, and their understanding with the goalkeeper was excellent.

Personally I would keep Verts at left back for the foreseeable future. Chiriches was superb.

We are building good options at the back.

Chiriches is settling in very quickly and I thought he was excellent on Sunday. Vertonghen can do a job at left back against the more physical sides like Everton and Stoke but struggles more against tricky, quick wingers.

Kaboul coming back is a major plus as well.

Once we get our full strength defence playing I wonder if AVB will be able to play a slightly less defensive midfield.

I think we look better going forward when we have Rose and Walker playing as the wingers can play more centrally. We need our backup full backs to mimic this.

Hopefully Fryers will be more Prem ready by next season. Unless Smith is ready then I think we'll need a new backup right back.

Kaboul is easily the best defender at the club, once he's fit he is one of the first names on the team sheet. Physically a monster but with pace, good at reading the game, can go forwards and play with the ball at his feet. One of the best in the Prem no doubt.

If we didn't have so many DM players I would like to see Verts or Vlad sitting in front of the back four and making the runs they love to do. Verts often seems our most creative attacking player and Vlad seems to be made of similar stuff

We have looked solid defensively and Vertonghen is no doubt a better defender than Rose but with Danny back in the team we can go back to how AVB wants to play. Walker and Rose pushing high up the pitch stretching the opposition because of the width, Capoue/Sandro drops back to almost form a back 3 with the centre backs and the inverted wingers give options on the inside to play through the opposition as they will have more space due to the width provided by the full backs. With Rose and Walker on the overlap as well then we should have more balance and Rose was certainly getting more crosses into the box at the beginning of the season which will only be a good thing for Soldado.

With the presence of width from the fullbacks as well I also believe AVB will want and allow the fluidity of changing positions of the attacking midfield 3...
