The question of Son Vs Martial is an interesting one, and does maybe raise the question of do we need Martial if he is going to cost 70 odd mil, is he that much better, maybe he will be. I'm not sure where I really sit on the Martial front, I guess for me he feels like a luxury buy when we don't have a CM. I don't particularly rate Gomes and would rather invest more money on a quality CM then Martial. Hypothetically, if it was a choice between Martial or Kovacic, I would choose Kovacic in a second. But that's just my opinion.

Aside from that, I still don't think utd will sell him to us. But I can see this dragging on till the buzzer.

For me a lot of it comes down to formations on the Martial/Son/Kovacic debate.

I think the 2nd would make me very excite

For me a lot of it comes down to formations on the Martial/Son/Kovacic debate.

If we have aspirations of achieving things then it shouldn't be either Martial or Kovacic it should be both. Whether those two or equivalent level it would massively improve not just the first team but the options too. As your example we could switch formations and personnel dependent on opposition, we'd have genuine rotational options where quality levels don't nosedive.

With talk pre transfer window of us having 150m to spend which would be replenished with sales I see no reason why we couldn't afford both of them/equivalent level and still have enough to sign a Toby replacement/backup CB too.

It only makes sense to have the fee under 60m if we sell them toby for a reduced price. 50% of something is more than 100% of nothing.

It's pretty simple they sell him for more than £60m they still get 50% of it. So sell him for £70m utd get £65m which is £5m more than if they sold him for £60m.
The only reason it would make sense for not selling him for more than £60m would be if we gave them a discount on toby in return.

You're agreeing with me then that they will try and get the most they can? I don't mind the rating it's not even a neg, but if you are going to disagree say why, it's a discussion board that's what we do. I might be wrong and would like to know what i got wrong.

If South Korea doesn't reach a certain level at the Asian Games later this year then Sonny is off for military service for 2 years - makes Martial that much more important. This signing would be massive - needed with Sonny but crucial without him.

This is how I am starting to view it. If we do somehow pull this off, it will be our record signing so he is coming here to be part of the starting XI. Our last signing was also in this area of the pitch (Moura) so even if this rumour of a change in formation are true I still think we will be seeing 2 of Son, Lamela & Sissoko leave.
Son ofcourse would be due to the military service rather than his performance on the pitch.
