You can of course put the ball in "unsavable" positions, but no player ever puts the ball in those positions every time he takes a penalty. Defoe could have quite easily scored with the penalty he took today. He was just unfortunate that Green dived in the exact place he placed it. Had Green gone the wrong way, or taken off more slowly, everyone would have been praising Defoe for such a good penalty.

It isnt luck, if you put it in the corner its a goal.

That's not true and you know it mate. It all comes down to the goalkeeper in penalty situations and how he reads the player's body language and movements. I knew Defoe would play it low from watching him take penalties and Keane does the same so it must have been just as obvious for a professional goalkeeper.

I thought he'd miss and it was poor penalty, way too near the keeper. Decent save but you'd expect him to (once he'd guessed the right way, it would have been hard not to have saved it).

I agree with TM, Defoe was wrong person to take it because of who it was against

Rubbish. He did not miss the penalty, it was saved. It was decent enough hit low, hard and going towards the corner.

It was a good save by Green.

Are you people new to the game?

Nobody ever saves a penalty. The shooter misses. ALWAYS!

Defoe choked.

You can now all resume your unmitigated and undeserved love for that crap gap-toothed waste of space. His father should have rolled over and shot him on the wall.

As long as you hit the ball hard and put it as much into a corner as you can, I don't think there's anything else you can do. I would say Defoe did that today.

He scored in the same fixture last year. :-|

well......

1. He had just come on

2. It was against his old club

3. He had hardly touched the ball

4. Needed a cool head

5. Was slightly arrogant to want to take it having just come on

Berbs should have taken it I think. He's a cool chap

He should never take penalties then.

You have some good points there, Taoi, though. Always hard to tell what of those points are gonna make a difference though. I think Defoe did well enough with the penalty though.

I take a special interest in penalties as I was always the pen taker in all the teams I played in .

I recall the last penalty JD scored , I came on here and said it was a poor penalty and he should never take one again .

Noone agreed of course cos he'd scored . So the last penalty he took he still showed the same lousy technique and it was saved .

Now he's fucked another crucial penalty . He must NEVER be allowed to lose us another goal again .

Both Keano and Berby are BRILLIANT penalty takers , I must assume ( I'm praying) they weren't on the pitch .
