well......

1. He had just come on

2. It was against his old club

3. He had hardly touched the ball

4. Needed a cool head

5. Was slightly arrogant to want to take it having just come on

Berbs should have taken it I think. He's a cool chap

Defoe has taken many penalties for us and has a good pen to goal ratio.

Rubbish. He did not miss the penalty, it was saved. It was decent enough hit low, hard and going towards the corner.

It was a good save by Green.

There is no such thing as a good penalty, when it`s missed. Any penalty thats scored from is a good penalty no matter how it`s taken.

I take a special interest in penalties as I was always the pen taker in all the teams I played in .

I recall the last penalty JD scored , I came on here and said it was a poor penalty and he should never take one again .

Noone agreed of course cos he'd scored . So the last penalty he took he still showed the same lousy technique and it was saved .

Now he's fucked another crucial penalty . He must NEVER be allowed to lose us another goal again .

Both Keano and Berby are BRILLIANT penalty takers , I must assume ( I'm praying) they weren't on the pitch .

So you are passing judgement without having seen the game? :-|

He should never take penalties then.

You have some good points there, Taoi, though. Always hard to tell what of those points are gonna make a difference though. I think Defoe did well enough with the penalty though.

yeah was a good penalty but all i can think that was going on in JD's head wasn't "I can win this game if i score" but more like "I can get one over on these fuckers with this"

thats obviously a guess but i'm sure its not far from the truth. Its too personal with westham and i'm sure it was on his mind on the run up.

Bloody hell, surely everyone agrees its more skill than luck. If you have a skill of sticking it in the corner you have scored, simple as.

Let me rephrase that a touch, if you have the skill of putting it in the corner you have more chance of scoring.

it can still be a poor penaltie even if it is scored. You can scuff the ball and it bobbles in to the back of the net. The result isn't poor, but the technice of the penalty is poor.

It was a good save by Green, and the penalty would have looked good had the keeper dived the wrong way. However I personally dont feel it was a good penalty (good penalities are unsavable by in large)

He never put it in the coner enough, I think the best penalty takers have the nerve to wait that split second for the keeper to commit and simply place it the other direction (Cantona was a master at this) but in fareness it takes a nerve of steel and a fast footballing brain to pull this off successfully.

its was against his old club dimi and he'd just come on.

don't enter a pie eaten competition if you've just eaten. You're just not ready.

yeah, because he has never scorede a pen after just coming on, or ever scored one agains Westham....

Penalties are down to a mix of luck, not skill but technique and preparation. For example, if a penalty taker has a 80% ratio of hitting it to the bottem right im sure the goalkeeper will be aware of it. You cant blame defoe for missing, top-top players miss penaltys or have them saved. Lets get off the lads back, he won us the penalty in the first place (which may i add was an injustice to westham). A draw was a fair result, we didnt deserve anything more. So there we go!

i agree, i just dont see why all the flack is aimed at Defoe, when in from what i remember we had more possetion (although bbc say otherwise) and we never tested Green enough times.
