Providing we keep our best sought-after players (Modric, Bale, VDV) - and I think we will - then I will judge this transfer window purely on which, if any, strikers we are able to bring in. The importance of upgrading our strikers absolutely dwarfs any other transfer related issues we will face this summer (always assuming we keep Modric et al) and is the only thing I will be worrying about. If we can bring in some clear, unambiguous upgrades on our current strikers then I will be confident of our prospects of success for next season; if we fail to bring new strikers in, or purchase strikers who are no upgrade on our current crop then I will fear for our chances.

It all boils down to that for me; it really is a simple 'do or die' scenario, IMO.

The truth is, we have amazing talent across the whole pitch, apart from our striking department, the various blunders by gomes and defensive errors. I think signings such as Parker, (not necessarily Friedel), Neville and Beckham not only add depth but vital experience. The kind of signings that distinguish us from top 4 contenders to title contenders, realistically we would have been third if we killed the smaller teams off, clearly signings like these would have ensured we do that. I'd also like to see us sign players to help us switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation, two combative midfielders like sandro and parker to tighten the defensive duties plus a shit hot striker like Drogba would be great.

Harry obviously wants a few experienced players and I can't see a problem with that. It certainly hasn't hurt Man Utd. I really doubt that we're going to buy five or six players over 30 though.

The thread is premature and slightly misleading as we've also been linked with a host of fancy foreign names which would be ambitious signings. But this is a message board so lets discuss.

HR is great at filling the gaps in a squad and for that Friedel makes perfect sense. I'm concerned that HR has a large squad at his disposal but rarely rotates. I'm not sure we need much more in the way of building a squad.

Hopefully we'll find at least two strikers that fit the bill and lose half a dozen players that won't make our squad.

Not going to judge until the window is closed.

These experienced players at clubs like Chelsea, Utd, were young when brought, they are not buying players 30 or over, thats why they are unloading them now

It's a false choice, isn't it? Strengthening the squad may give us a better chance of finishing in the top 4.

These players won't have the stamina for our coming season, so they are just part of a squad. Although going by last season, some of our more youthful players don't have the stamina either.

Makelele? Ballack? They were both around 30 when they were bought. As you say Man Utd haven't really needed to buy any experienced players for quite a while. Every team needs an experienced head or two - even if you keep them on the bench until needed.

Neither. Losing Kranjcar, Palacios and Gomes (whilst I have been a big critic) for the likes of Pienaar, Parker, Friedel and Cole doesn't represent any kind of upgrade for me. Plus as we will be losing Bassong, when we have 3 CBS likely to retire in 1-2 years, it smacks of poor, short-term management.
