I think they'd be fine with each other. If Harry can get along with Paolo Di Canio then...

If we sign Arshavin, I doubt we'd sign Defoe as well.

Think it's one or the other...

Signing Arshavin and a DM would complete our squad of midfielders - and I think we'd be up there competing with the top 4 qith the players we have in that department (particularly if Jenas gets his act together as he has shown glimpses of recently).

Now that Modric has found his position in the team...where does that leave Arshavin?

We don't need Defoe if we are gonna play with only one front man, we got 2 already fighting for that 1 position.

There are a handfull of players in Europe that can turn a game with a bit of magic and when they get the ball, defenders are frightened.
No 1 is Lionel Messi - Spurs have absolutely NO chance of buying him!
No 2 is Christiano Ronaldo - Spurs have absolutely NO chance of buying him!
No 3 is Andrei Arshavin - Spurs have definitely a chance of buying him.
What should we do???????????

BREAK THE BANK AND GET HIM ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We could play him anywhere in the team simply because he is a better player than any we currently have!

why people just dont get it?

Arshavin and Modric are no thread to each others position! Arshavin is a left midfielder / winger who CAN play behind the striker!

And the chances of signing him are imo the same as in summer:

Were in the same position we were in summer, a team that started bad into the season but later showed what were capable of. We werent a top 4 team in summer and we arent now, but we were and are a team with the ambition and the players to break into the top 4! Arshavin knew that in summer and he knows it now!

so the only questions remaining are from our side:
First: Do we want to spend the money needed for him?
And second: Does Harry want Arshavin in our current squad (im pretty sure he wants)

Now if there is Barcelona, Real Madrid etc in for him, with the same bidding price, its pretty sure that he will join them, because he doesnt lack self confidence, so he thinks he will get a first squad position.

If its upper mid-table teams bidding from any top league (italy, england, spain, germany, france), were the ones with the highest chances imo, we already had conversations with him and have imo the best squad in this sector of teams...

Modric at ACM, Arshavin on the left wing or second striker.

It would be similar to Man U playing both Scholes/Anderson and Ronaldo, Arsenal Fabregas and Nasri or Chelsea Deco and Cole/Malouda.

If we sign Arshavin, I doubt we'd sign Defoe as well.

Agreed, plus I can't see what Defoe would bring us that Bent and Pav don't already. Arshavin would on the other hand give us that dynamism and link up play we still lack as we get into the final 3(see middle 40 minutes of the City game where we had them on the ropes but barely created a chance).

Technically gifted and intelligent players thrive off of more technically gifted intelligent players. Modric + Arshavin = Win.

Unless we arranged a loan deal from Jan to the summer then he can't sign because you cannot re-sign for you previous club within a year or leaving.

Defoe only signed for Pompey in the summer, as the deal was done too late in the Jan window so it was made a loan deal until the summer.

We won't sign Defoe!
All this started with a question from a talk sport interview on the morning of the Bolton game when he asked Harry if he'd buy Defoe and he was non comital but said Defoe is a teriffic player, he says that about everyone you ask him about though, since then it's become a forgone conclusion but trust me it won't happen.

The year is July to July though, as with the case of not being able to play for 3 clubs in a year. After July, this counts as a different year. At least that is my understanding of the rule.

He said in his first interview on SSN that he wished Defoe was here.

I personally don't want to read too much into it, but Harry certainly hasn't done anything to dispel the rumours that he might go in for him. But I'm sure now Bent and Pavlyuchenko are performing coupled with the fact that Defoe can't offer us anything in the Uefa will probably focus his mind on a more problem position for us.

IOMLS, you may well be right, I just read the rule and understoof it that way. Even so, I'm pretty sure summer contracts can't kick in til July 1st... so Defoe would've officially signed for Pompey on July 1st 2008.

Andrei Arshavin has admitted that a New Year move to Real Madrid would appeal to him.

The Russia international has once again reiterated his desire to leave Zenit St Petersburg when the transfer window re-opens in January, with a host of clubs believed to be tracking his availability.

Premier League outfit Tottenham were among a host of clubs heavily linked with the talented playmaker over the summer, although their interest appears to have cooled.

Primera Liga champions Real were also among those to express interest during the close-season, and remain keen on the highly-regarded 27-year-old.

Arshavin remains unsure as to where his future may lie, but admits he would welcome the opportunity to accept a new challenge in the Spanish capital.

Rumour

"The truth is I do not want to speak about that, it is only a rumour and I cannot say a lot more," he told AS.

"How could I not want to go to Madrid? The only thing that I have said is that I want to leave Zenit in the New Year.

"But I have not come out and said I prefer any particular team. Now the most important thing is not if Madrid want me, but whether Zenit will let me leave.

"Of course I like Madrid, they are a great club, one of the best."

Interested

Arshavin believes he has achieved all he can at Zenit and is desperate to test himself in one of Europe's top divisions.

While the Primera Liga appears to represent his most likely destination, the Russian ace admits a switch to England is not out of the question.

"It (the Primera Liga) is the league that I have followed the most, but the Premier League also interests me a lot as that is another league I like. As I have said before, any of the big European leagues would be good for me," he added.

"It is difficult when you want one thing and then something else happens instead, but there have been a lot of people telling me that will change. So I now believe that at the start of 2009 I will move to a new team.

"I feel that I have repaid everything that I owed to Zenit and that I cannot give any more to the team. The time has come for me to test myself somewhere else."

Obviously not a die hard Barca fan then
