18:45 GOAL - Aston Villa 0-1 Tottenham - Jermain Defoe (57 mins)
Lovely pass leads to a lovely goal. Gareth Bale starts the move by taking on defenders in a mazy run, he has to check out and go back into midfield where Kyle Naughton slides in a gem of a ball to Jermain Defoe. A peach of a pass, Defoe is onside and as Brad Guzan comes out, Defoe flicks the ball through his legs with the outside of his boot. Classy finish.
18:49 GOAL - Aston Villa 0-2 Tottenham - Gareth Bale (61 mins)
A catalogue of errors - but take your hats off for a fabulous solo finish from Gareth Bale. Aston Villa actually begin with a smart attack, Christian Benteke drives into the area but his cut back is poor and it is hoofed clear. There are more than enough Villa defenders back though but one takes a bad touch, and then Joe Bennett's tackle on Aaron Lennon sends the ball into Bale's path. His first touch is magnificent though, flicking it past the last defender, and he then dances around Brad Guzan with ease before slotting into the net.
18:54 SUBSTITUTION Scott Parker is coming on for Mousa Dembele, who is struggling with a knock. Parker is working his way back to full fitness.
19:00 GOAL - Aston Villa 0-3 Tottenham - Gareth Bale
Great goal again as Gareth Bale kills off Aston Villa good and proper. Aaron Lennon is too sprightly for the defence, cutting in from the right before picking out Bale in space inside the area. He takes one touch before firing into the bottom corner.
19:06 SUBSTITUTION Spurs make a change, with Gylfi Sigurdsson on in place of Emmanuel Adebayor.
19:12 GOAL - Aston Villa 0-4 Tottenham - Gareth Bale (84 mins)
Quality, quality goal as Aston Villa are left chasing shadows. Kyle Walker is given time and space on the right, he picks out the rampaging run of substitute Gylfi Sigursson down the right channel. The Icelander squares the ball first time to Gareth Bale, who finds space on the penalty spot again and slams home into the roof of the net. That's his first Premier League hat-trick.
19:16 SUBSTITUTION Aston Villa are delighted as Gareth Bale comes off - Andros Townsend takes his place.

Aston Villa host Tottenham on Boxing Day looking to bounce back

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert will be demanding an immediate response from his charges for Tottenham's Boxing Day visit following his side's drubbing at Chelsea.

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert will be demanding an immediate response from his charges for Tottenham's Boxing Day visit following his side's drubbing at Chelsea.

The Blues knocked eight goals past Lambert's side as their recent good run came to a humiliating halt at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Villa had previously been unbeaten in six games in all competitions but the heavy defeat leaves Lambert's side 16th in the table, just three points above the drop zone and with the worst goal difference in the top flight.
For Spurs, Andre Villas-Boas' men go into the clash sitting in sixth in the table, one of four teams tied on 30 points, having taken 13 points from their last six games.

But Villas-Boas will also be demanding an improvement to his side's away form following just one win and three losses from their last four league trips.

On the positive side for the visitors, Spurs have not lost at Villa Park since New Year's Day 2008 and beat their rivals 2-0 at White Hart Lane in October.

Villa boss Lambert kept with the same side which beat Liverpool against Chelsea but could now make changes after the big loss.

Midfielder Stephen Ireland started on the bench against the Blues after he missed the 3-1 win over the Reds through illness and he could now come into the side.

But Lambert is sweating over the fitness of defender Ron Vlaar, striker Gabriel Agbonlahor and winger Charles N'Zogbia after the trio missed the Stamford Bridge clash with calf, thigh and knee problems respectively.

Tottenham

Forward Clint Dempsey is a doubt for Spurs after he missed Saturday's draw against Stoke with a groin problem.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto may make his long-awaited comeback from a knee injury while Scott Parker could also make his first start of the season after coming off the bench in the last two games following his recovery from an Achilles injury.

Younes Kaboul is expected to return from his knee injury next month.

Aston Villa skipper Ron Vlaar (calf), Gabriel Agbonlahor (thigh) and Charles Nzogbia (knee) will all be assessed ahead of the game with Tottenham.

But the home side will again be without Darren Bent, who has a hamstring injury,

Tottenham's Clint Dempsey is doubtful with a groin problem, but Benoit Assou-Ekotto could return from a knee injury.

Scott Parker is pushing for a first start of the season after two substitute appearances.

I'm heading to Villa Park to find out what happened after the nightmare before Christmas. I'm not sure what shocked me most about Aston Villa's capitulation at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, the scoreline itself, the fact it could easily have been 10 or 12-0, or that goalkeeper Brad Guzan looked far and away Villa's best player.

Was this really the same team that won 3-1 in front of the Kop just a week earlier? A young, vibrant side enjoying positive media headlines at the weekend and looking forward to a League Cup semi-final after winning 4-1 at Norwich recently?

The answer is yes it was the same team and as with most things, I guess the answer lies somewhere in the middle at the moment. They're not as consistently good as Benteke's backheel at Anfield suggested, nor as bad as Sunday's hapless defending indicated.

Inconsistency is going to be a feature this season with such a young team, but Villa fans will live with that provided they feel the overall trend is in the right direction.

Tottenham were left frustrated after Saturday's goalless draw at home to Stoke, whose defending was everything that Villa's was not at Chelsea. Two points dropped at home saw AVB's team slip out of the top four into sixth place in what is currently a very tight race for those Champions League spots.

Spurs have got a good recent record against Villa and the odds favour them heavily here against a club with a terrible home record of just three wins from the last 21 in the league at Villa Park.

But there'll be plenty of interest in seeing how Villa respond just three days after the club's worst ever defeat in 3,936 games of top-flight football.

matchfacts.jpg

Head-to-head

  • Tottenham are unbeaten in their last eight matches against Aston Villa (W5, D3) since a 2-1 home defeat in September 2008.
  • Villa have won only one of their last seven fixtures against Spurs at Villa Park. Four of those games ended 1-1, including the most recent encounter on the penultimate weekend of last season when Villa secured their Premier League safety.
Aston Villa
  • Defeat at Stamford Bridge ended a five-game unbeaten Premier League run for Paul Lambert's side.
  • There has only been one goal scored in the last three matches at Villa Park - Christian Benteke's winner against Reading on 27 November.
  • Villa have taken just 18 points from their last 21 home league matches (W3, D9, L9).
  • Paul Lambert's side are the Premier League's joint lowest scorers alongside QPR and Stoke with 15 goals.
Tottenham
  • Spurs have lost three of their last four Premier League away games.
  • Tottenham's record of four away wins and 16 goals scored on the road is surpassed only by Manchester United.
  • Andre Villas-Boas' side have scored in all eight of their Premier League away games this term.
  • Tottenham have suffered only two defeats in their last 18 Premier League games in the month of December (W10 D6 L2).

Villa, a traditional Xmas period bogey side for us....

We won there two years ago on boxing day, one of the best performances of the season to...

I think we'll edge this, I do expect a response from Villa but they'll come out and play which will really suit us for the counter, its a big pitch as well.

2-1 to us.

Less of 'The Bridge' chat chaps.

'The scum, chav, plastic palace' is a better name for that ground and it's hideous inhabitants.
