At what point will people stop saying we’ve never had it so good?

Even if woefully under-matched, in anything in life you should always be trying to win. "Being realistic" is the buzz phrase of losers.

So I assume you are going to dump your girlfriend because she isn't Angelina Jolie, quit your job because it doesn't pay 8 figures and then burn your house down because it's not a Hollywood penthouse?

"Being realistic" isn't the buzz phrase of losers, it's the buzz phrase of realists who happen to live in the real world where real things can happen.

eh? A footballers playing span is 12 years (18-32, simplistic I know) but we've been building for longer than that. If you truly building a football team like Fergie, its done in 6 years, peaks for 2-5 then the rebuilding starts again.

Not my point, just saying that it does pay to remember, and cherish, some of the great times we've had these last few seasons under Redknapp (and Ramos/Jol), but that isn't mutually exclusive from wanting to get better, improve and win things, regular qualification for the CL and hopefully one day win the EPL, better still create a truly great team that leaves a mark on football.

what he is trying to say that, dont settle for anything less, than the best. of course you dont quit your job because it doesnt pay u 8 figures, nor burnt you house down because its not a hollywood penthouse. what i m trying to say is that if you job is paying not as well, you dont go around telling yourself ' oh well this is me. i'm already pretty good compared to the janitor'.

what i am talking about is the attitude towards progress, and the pressure to give yourself in order to improve. if you stay in a normal house down town, does that mean you dont dream and work your ass off for the penthouse? because if you do want it, with limited talent, you can still achieve the best that your talent can achieve, instead of staying put. even if in the end you dont get your penthouse, you will definitely achieve more than what you originally had.

I never said we were entitled to anything. But for a club of our size and history not to strive for better is foolish. Fortunately that is a fan thing, to be happy with 4th. I don't think the people in charge see 4th as the limit of our potential.
I don't think we are not striving for better but realistically with our resources and looking at where we have come from the last 20years of average mid-table finished we ARE doing very well. On resources in terms of stadium size, wages, transfer spend and revenue the likes of: Man.City,Man.U,Chelsea are impossible to match, Newcastle,Arsenal and Liverpool are then also slightly ahead of us we are mabye about 7th in terms of resources but have managed to cleverly compile a very very good probably the 4th best squad in the league. I'd expect with that squad to win a cup every 3-4years and come top5. Until we get a bigger stadium or football changes the financial rules 4th is good for us as pathetic as that is I agree. We have won leagues, doubles, FA Cups in the past but the fact of the matter is right now, 4th/5th is all we can realistically hope for however we should aim to come 1st and I think Harry has. When we were 'In the title race' he didn't say don't be stupid we have no chance he said 'You never know, and nothing is impossible', right things to say in my opinion. If he'd said yer I think we have a very good chance and then our collapse happened we would have been even more of a laughing stock.

At what point will people stop saying, look where we were, look what we’ve achieved

When we get league finishes that are either regularly below what our resources would suggest is acceptable or we get a single league finish some way below what our resources would suggest is acceptable. So, if all else remains equal, not if we finish 5th next season. Not if we finish 6th either. Although I suspect Levy would 'kneejerk' Redknapp out if we finished 6th.

Never, only winners want to do continuously better and unfortunately not everyone is a winner.

is that true though? only winners want to do better continuously? i doubt it very much. i imagine pretty much all football clubs want to do better continuously, it's just that not all of them can afford what it takes to be better.

only losers say that. i'm serious. of every competition, the winner will always say i was here to win all along, and the loser will always say "oh you know sometimes the experience is really important, i was never here to win but to gain experience". you hear this in school, in ur sports activities, in your sunday league football. the losers and the people who dont achieve their dreams will always, always say this. and the problem is this mentality will never ever build characters, let alone champions

winners always say fight hard and give everything you've got. arnold says that, jordan says that, kobe bryant says that, ronnie coleman says that. everyone at the highest level, and have achieved those levels, understand that mentality is the most important in sports. on paper one might be better, but once the whistle blows, all bets are off. the one with the biggest heart will ALWAYS win. and even if he doesnt this time, he will always, always try, until they finally win.

the mentality instilled in us is that, oh we used to suck, so this is good enough. is it? so just because we used to suck, we can continue to suck? one thing about redknapp that bothers me is that he doesnt instill the winning mentality. unlike fergie, unlike mourinho. these managers taught their players losing is not an option, let alone losing to a lower opponent, thats absolute disgrace. these mentality is instilled into players from roy keane, to solksjaer, to giggs, to scholes, to rooney, to ronaldo, drogba, lampard, terry, cole . these players always perform when they are needed to. they understand when they are down, they have to get a goal back no matter what. and when they do, they know they have to win it, no matter what. they dont rest, they dont settle for second. they dont go, oh well we derserve to draw anyways. no. one chance. and thats all it takes. that amount of concentration, amount of composure, amount of mentality

i love HR. but i feel the weak mentality in our squad is partly his fault. i would love someone younger, and a much stronger mentality to takeover when HR finally leaves. only then our squad will truly grow. we had title at our grasp, we had third on our hand. we have no excuses

sorry, i don't mean to offend so please try not to take this the wrong way but it's a long time since i've read such trite, asinine nonsense as this.

Sorry have only just read this post.
How on earth do you know? Do you sit in on training sessions and team talks? When Manchini dismissed City's title chances in the run in do you think he was portraying the same message to his squad internally?
City's and Chelsea's wage bill far exceeds our total turnover as a football club. Your argument in light of the circumstances we compete in reminds me of 'The Black Knight' in Monty Python.

I do and it was much better thab any season under Redknapp.

I don't.
But as I said above, I became a Junior Yiddo the season we were relegated - so I can honestly say we have had it worse.
By the same token, I then grew watching the team of the early to mid 80s, and until this current eopch includes a few trophies like that one did, I can also honestly say we have had it better.
