I guess a big part of his seeming diffidence may be the Portugese character and/or the 'Saudade' they're always going on about being central to it. Apparent glumness (or intended modesty) might be reflections of a deep but not unpleasant melancholy they feel permeates their culture.

i am part Portuguese and you show a deep knowledge of the culture to know about sudade, its quite unique a bit like the same emotion the Celts feel except they dont have a name for it
