I like Witsel, he's a good, busy footballing cm. But I think we have very good options in that area already with others bubbling under.

Then again, I said the same about Alderweireld, who's been a big success.

We are well stocked in CM with last Season's CM. Mason & Bentaleb struggling to get into XI
No need for another CM/DM

Question is - is he better than some of what we have?
Imo the answer is yes and if the opportunity is one where we can improve at a reasonable price we should.
Also, as someone said it only takes 1 bad tackle on Dier or Any of our central defense and it could possibly derail our form!
Not saying we are anywhere near Fergusons Man U teams but he always wanted to improve in positions even when they were treble winners. It also keeps players on their toes!

If this is the case why have we dragged Dier half way to India to play a Europa league game when he will be required on Sunday.. It`s because we have no one else to do his job!!

Guys see the bigger picture for a change the League is totally open this year so lets aim for the top and if we fall short it will mean 2nd or 3rd not 4th again!!

Also please stop going on about the money we have spent nothing in net terms for 5 years and the tv money doubles next season so rest assured splashing out a bit will not bankrupt us.. Buying Witzel or a player like him also gives us Dier as extra cover in Central Defence should we need it.

For me Striker is the main priority, followed by Defensive mid and if we have cash left over a playmaker to unlock the park the bus teams.

If you didnt realise by now, manager wanted to play first XI as much as possible. It was not just Dier - Toby, Jan, Kane, Eriksen , Son played too.... He left behind Dembele & Walker - thats because given they have come back from long injuries their recovery time is nt good enough.

Fact Pochettino played Dier is because he wanted to make sure we go through to U32 not because he doesn't have a choice at CM. Had Bentaleb been fit, may be he would have rested Dier also.

Axel Witsel isnt worth 18m & we are not a club that pays 18m to put them on bench. If you think otherwise, you are kidding yourself.

But Bentaleb is not fit is he that's my point... we still need more depth, the league is so open we should be doing all we can to win the thing no reason we can`t challenge with the right additions.

Witzel is obviously not rubbish as he plays nearly every game for the number one ranked international team in the world.
He is 26 years old knows our Belgians who are telling to come play for us. £18 million is not over priced in this market and we always pay in instalments anyway..

However I would be happy with some of the other players we have been linked to in this position.

Anyway lets agree to disagree on this one...

We played what is basically our full starting XI short of our fullbacks. So unless you're saying we have no depth other than at fullback it's basically a non sequitur.

Divock Origi was starting games for that "#1 ranked international team".

They also play Vertonghen at LB.

That ranking doesn't make their decisions the golden gospel truth.

I actually like Origi think he will be a good player in a couple of seasons but I think he lacks confidence.. I think Toby plays left back also but my point is Belgium has lots of talent and Witzel is in the their strongest eleven..

what I really like about Spurs now is the competition for places. Last season Mason and Bentaleb were the two in midfield now they are on the bench.. I am not sure Dier has anyone to give them that challenge or to step in if his level drops.. Tripier and Davies has improved Walker and Rose.. Dembele and Lamela have had to improve I think at this moment Dier, Eriksen and Kane have no challengers for their positions.

Dier already missed the Liverpool game and we did well. Eriksen missed time also, but his natural replacement (Pritchard) was hurt as well.

Posters like @Bus-Conductor have already highlighted how it's not so much our midfield anyway. Dembele/Bentaleb can over for Dier in all likelihood.

Would you like to see Dembele or Bentaleb drop in between Alderweireld and Vertonghen when we have possession or sit back to allow Toby or Jan to foray upfield like we have been doing this season? I know I wouldn't. We do have a lot of CMs at present but none apart from Dier has a defensive mentality. I don't think Witsel is the answer by the way.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind, dropping between CB's isn't exactly the world's biggest ask.

We don't need to spend £20m on a player just because another player is currently injured, are you actually hearing yourself?

It`s called having a deep squad of quality which usually equals success ie winning things!!

btw I didn`t say it had to be Witzel but we do need another player of that type who can screen the defense and let the release the rest of the midfiled to be more creative.

People on hear worry about the money like it coming from the kids bank account give me a break we have the money even Levi admits this as he said the Transfer budget is not affected by the stadium. We spend less in NET terms than any other club for the last five seasons.. We have also reduced our wage bill significantly so please lets stop pleading poverty..

you make a really good point lots of people on the forum said Alderweireld was shit and was not good enough for us so to be honest don`t think we have many future premier league scouts here... I suspect Witzel would be a super signing for us I dont see him give the ball away cheaply and he protects it Dembele style with his strength. He usually plays the ball simply to the more attacking players but he is capable of going on a run with things open up. If we ever want to challenge for the title rather than trying to scrape into forth place every year then we need to buy players of this level. Why do we need to wait for the stadium to be build to try and challenge when with all the chaos at Chelsea, City, United and Arsenal an opportunity presents itself this year.. last time we had this chance was under Harry and we under invested in January and blew it lets have a go this time!!

Although he sounds expensive, it would mark another classic signing to cover both DM and CM role......what is wrong with this?

It's called spending stupidly when there are holes in the squad which needs to be addresses first, how many times does this need to be said, the priority is a backup to Kane so it is pointless spending big money when other areas needs to be addressed first.

Keep saying this but Dembele can do a job there when Dier is out, why can't you see this?

We do not need to spend big money for a specialist role when we have other players who can do a job there, its nonsensical and greedy.

You make it sound like we can only buy 1 player, in which case a back up to Kane is the obvious priority. That is obviously not the case. Dembele could stand in for Dier, just like he could stand in for Kane. Chadli could stand in for Kane too, but those options would weaken us - and we have money in the bank (allegedly) to stop that happening.
