I'm not too worried about my eldest lad, he's savvy enough not to be influenced in that manner, but my middle boy... nah he ain't going anywhere ever!!!

Watching the reports and first hand accounts on sky sports news

Truly it's a sad situation

Horrible to think of how many kids have been affected in total

@Shanks it makes your toes curl, doesn't it? But wrapping kids in cotton wool doesn't help either. At least anyone working with kids these days needs CRB checks etc, which is some comfort. But I suppose, you can't go through life assuming ones kids will be exposed to something as dreadful as this, or we'd never sleep or let them do anything.

CRB checks only show if somebody has been convicted. There is nothing in a clean CRB check that should give any parent any confidence. There needs to be a culture where kids are aware of how paedophiles work and can speak out which appears to be where we are heading.

What is frightening is the media attitude to this. This story should be front page news. Its hardly on any back pages. Had it been female swimmers or cyclists, there would have been a national man hunt. Its like as if its alright its boys, it doesnt matter.

I couldn't agree more. The ones that never get caught are probably the sneakiest and most predatory. It's about giving a child the confidence to speak to you, as a parent, about anything in my opinion. They mustn't have any fear about being able to speak to you, no matter what the issue it. (Easier said than done).

CRB's were a step in the right direction though. But it is time to take it a step further.

On the subject of safe guarding checks, there was an interesting call in to 909 this morning. An expert in Safe Guarding children in sports. He mentioned some ridiculous loop holes in things like the CRB system. Because many liberals were up in arms and canvassed the legislators, saying "not everyone should be checked...they just want to help", the usual well meaning folk who haven't got a bloody clue about the wider ramifications. The example he gave was around 'positions of trust'. So, a coach of the kids ticks all the boxes for checks to be conducted. However, the treasurer of a club, because of the position they hold, wouldn't necessarily need to be checked. Yet, he / she could well have access to the kids and form relationships with them.

Does that ring true to anyone on here?

There still needs to be a wider education on it, definitely.

One thing Id like to know, why is it more than likely boys that get large scale abuse? How do so many people have a taste for little boys (MP's, Hollywood, Church, Football, Saville etc)? Its gross man.

I am pretty sure Girls are just as affected, If not even more. I expect most of it to happen domestically though, which might put them off speaking out even more.

But yeah, it's extremely sick either way.

Girls probably are more affected but historically girls have been much more likely to report outside abuse than boys. Perhaps it has something to do with the way we have traditionally brought up our boys ie not to complain about things and to "be a man" etc.

The other dangerous thing about CRB checks is that people might put far too much faith in a clear CRB if they don't understand what they are. Barry Benell would have had a clear CRB record for many years if such a thing had existed back then.

I remember reading somewhere that boys were less likely to report. Connected to the embarrassment and being labelled a homosexual.

How true that is I don't know but sounds plausible.

I played youth football to a good level, coached by a guy, on and off,who I thought I knew well, from the age of about 11 to 18. All the guys liked him, very funny man. I'd been in a room alone with him too. Well known coach in the area. Then almost 15 years later, go into local shop and see his face on the front page of local paper, sent down for abusing boys for the last 17 years. Never in a million years would I have thought he was capable. It shows you never really know someone or whats going on behind closed doors or in his head.

Same here. I posted on another thread some scumbag I used to play cricket with and counted as a friend.

Turns out he was also a peadophile. He may have been a bit leery ( towards women not children )but never would I have guessed what was really going through his mind.

The CRB checks have now been superseded by DBS checks and the enhanced DBS checks include police warnings etc.
People without criminal records can still come to light if they have been reported or warned in the past.

Very brave of Paul Stewart. Not easy to go public with things. He has three children and has to think about them too.

Good luck to him

Why do so many bastards abuse their position and destroy so many lives?:(
