Benedikt Howedes is the subject of a feature in this week's edition of German magazine SportBild. It's claimed that his current club Schalke are keen to get the defender to sign a new contract and stay with them long term, but that's a long way from being a certain scenario and Schalke have plenty to worry about.

SportBild go through comments Howedes has said over recent months about potentially playing in England. The comments were made to them and leave clear the defender's desire to challenge in the Premier League. Howedes has been repeatedly linked to clubs in England and SportBild bring up the prospect of a summer transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.

The German international's value is put at €18m and SportBild don't think that would be a problem for Tottenham Hotspur, especially given the extra money pumping into Premier League clubs from the TV deal. The magazine state Spurs 'can easily' do a deal and cover the amount Schalke would require.

It's nervous times for the German club over the future of their defender and speculation will surely increase between now and the summer transfer window, with English clubs perhaps being impressed by Howedes' experience. Despite having bags of experience, the player is still only 27 years of age and this will likely be his last huge contract.

Recon he would be perfect for us. A born leader and defensively disciplined. Believe he could command a back four.

Get your best suits and selling heads on boys, if there's any chance of that happening you need to get that done ASAP!

Would suit us down to the ground. Good age, good experience, great mentality, wants to play in premier league, in a position we are looking at.... and the fee would be manageable.

only we could cock it up from here.

Höwedes would be a perfect fit for us. Can play full back too, as he does for Germany.

It seems like they've just slapped the name of any club down to make it a story.

This would be a brilliant transfer if it happened though.

But it won't.

I reckon United would be in for him if he were available. Unless they go silly money for Hummels.

This would be a fantastic signing....natural leader, very smart defender, does what he has to for the club...

I would be surprised that IF he was available some of the clubs with serious cash wouldn't be making offers for him. Plus it says that Shalke want him to re-sign which means this could be an agent trying to get his contract value up....so it feels like he wouldn't be available.

But if he was available.....would be the type of player that you make it a priority to try and sign.

I've wanted him here for years. He is the type of leader we need at the back. I don't care if he yelled in German, I suspect he'd be able to control our line.

This is what we need this summer, signings that can come in a make difference to us rather than sit on the bench

Fantastic player, if he were to leave Schalke then this is the only other place I'd like to see him.

Can't see him leaving Schalke (a young team) just to come to a similar situation here though. I think his ambitions are more European based than they are monetary based.

What a bunch of bollocks. I happened to read the original Sportbild article yesterday, and it absolutely had no mention of Spurs in any shape or form. Hoewedes did say that he would not switch within German League as he is loyal to Schalke but he wants a new challenge and PL is definitely a great option for him and it is the only other league he'd consider playing in. I do consider him a top fit for Spurs. I doubt the likes of City, manure, and Chelsea would go for him,as he is considered slightly below the top notch level but a good player nonetheless.

edit: I guess it is possible that the article they are quoting is a different version than the one I saw. The paper and the internet version tend to be slightly different.

Would be a great signing for us...... But think we'd struggle to do it, as whilst we're pissing about trying to penny pinch someone else will come in & sign him
