During the WC I was sat with two German fans who didn't rate him in the slightest and he was the reason they felt a little nervous about their chances, yet he seems very capable whenever I have seen him.

He's not very popular or well rated amongst those who aren't Schalke fans, think of him as like the German Carragher in that regard. It'd be like if in the 2006 world cup England didn't have a LB so they put Carragher there. LB has been quite a troublesome spot for Germany since Lahm vacated it so given Höwedes played every minute of every game there, out of position, and they won the cup, everyone should be grateful!

Indeed. Reminds me when English fans hated the idea of Owen Hargreaves starting games, only for him to be our best performer.

Funny thing is, Hargreaves was better in an England shirt than Gerrard ever was!

I've wanted him here for years. He is the type of leader we need at the back. I don't care if he yelled in German, I suspect he'd be able to control our line.
I'd say yelling in German would make him more able to control our back line if anything. It's such an authoritative language.

Want want want. A great leader, utility man (Can play CB, LB and RB) Is an established international World Cup Winner, and would be a popular figure I feel as he is a passionate footballer who is a born defender...

The exact reason we will fuck this up...

As we are apparently only looking at the £10-15m mark players, at £13m sign him quick before the euro recovers!

The buyout clause is 15 million Euros, so there is no necessity for negotiation. Check out this list of buyout in BL. There are some juicy names in there.

These are exactly the sort of players we need to be looking at. Ones that will come straight into the starting eleven immediately and improve us.

Not players with big question marks over them.

Damn, I would take a significant number of those players - although I'm sure not all of them would come. At the very least we should take a hard look at Howedes, Son, Bender, Lasogga, Tah, and Volland. I hope we do a lot of Buli shopping this summer. The prices are reasonable and the league is probably closest to the prem in playing style and quality, and we pay better wages than most German clubs so enticing players to move shouldn't be too difficult.

The harsh reality is we are 6th choice for the vast majority of players who want to play in the premier league

The only way we can be a higher choice for players that the other 5 teams want is for the club to really show the player he is wanted, to pay him more then anyone else and to guarantee him to start

Fortunately 5th/6th place (because I think we are even with Liverpool) in the PL still puts us in about the top 12 destinations worldwide for players. We aren't going to go toe-to-toe with Chelsea or United and come out ahead very often, but for any player that is passed up by clubs like that and the European elite (Juve, Bayern, etc) we are going to be one of their best options. We just need to be a little smarter with our scouting than a club that can afford to buy three top players and see which one of them makes it.

Thats a bit of a stretch, not everyone above us is after the same targets that we are

If his release clause is 15m then why haven't we signed him already?

He's easily better than our current crop, don't think he'd turn his nose up at £80k a week to join us in London. This is exactly the sort of signing we need to be making.

Him and JV would complement each other fantastically imo.

Howedes is on 35k Pounds a week for Schalke, am sure we can easily double it. I think the problem could be
i) Other money bag clubs interested in him
ii) Their chairman, who I guess was pissed off by Levy with Holtby transfer
