I don't think Fazio was a back-up for Musacchio. Fazio has constantly been ahead of him in the Argentine national team pecking order.
Fair enough, man. I might be remembering it wrongly, but I thought Musacchio was the main target and then, once it was clear that we wouldn't be signing him for whatever reason, we fell back on Fazio?

Personally, I think that Musacchio is a tad overrated and certainly wasn't worth the money being talked about last summer.

I still don't feel like the guy got a shot. I'd rather we sell Dembele and Capoue and keep him. I still think he's a good player to have that really seems to have the right type of personality in this team that seems to lack it at times.

Both have their faults but are much better than stambouli, I respect your opinion a lot and am suprised you can't see that, bear in mind I think both have big faults in their game. Stambouli does seem to have a good level of technique and skill to his credit

I don't mean to be harsh but a terrible signing, it's not as if we were short of numbers in that position.

Tbh though I'm basing most if my opinion on his sheer lack of game time. Not that I've seen anything in his cameos to really consistly suggest long term there's anything worthwhile there

Fazio was most certainly a back-up, just like how Eriksen was a back-up behind Willian. We only moved for them once the other deals were impossible.

If I am not too wrong I think this article talks about Spurs doing a deal with Thauvin including Stambouli going the other way...

It doesn't really mention any specifics, just mentions that the president discussed the purchase of Stambouli whilst negotiating the sale of Thauvin (which is interesting because the same President said himself they didn't mention Thauvin during their meeting!).

I imagine that Marseille would want to keep any sale for Thauvin separate from a deal for Stambouli as they're pretty desperate for money this summer and wouldn't want Levy trying to water down a potentially pretty tidy deal for them by mixing in a player swap.

I remember that 4-0 versus Newcastle in the COC. He played alongside Bentaleb and they did a very good job. Mason needs a break, give Stambou the last two games.

If it was up to me, I'd give the last two games to Dele Alli (Providing he is eligible to play, not sure if he is or not, correct me if I'm wrong) and see how an Alli-Bentaleb partnership works?

My "idealistic" side would like to endrose that....but what if Alli is not ready yet to be a starter at Spurs? The fans will be up in arms - spouting all kinds of "explicits" over why Levy & co. did not get a quality CM player this summer window.

If that was the thought process I doubt he'd be on the bench in the first place. I would much sooner have a player on the pitch who is not afraid to mix it than a lot of the current crop who look like they don't give a toss. I suppose my biggest hope for Stambouli is that he has some sort of virus which is holding him back and that he will stay with us and get up to full fitness. There were never any concerns about his 'engine' when he was in France, and I think he comes across as a strong character and a bit of a leader.

I agree mate, re wanting a player on the pitch who's not afraid to get in the mix & get his hands dirty, so to speak. I was just throwing the idea out there because I am struggling to see why he's been used to little, especially when, as others have said, Bentaleb, and Mason in particular, have looked as though they could use a rest.

I never saw the guy play before he came to THFC, but I don't remember seeing too many complaints on here when we signed him? So as you and others have intimated, perhaps there's something physically wrong with Stambouli?

I think this is yet another occasion where us supporters wish our club would be a little more interactive with us about the players we pay to watch & support :(

Matt, have you seen a fair bit of Dele Alli? That's a genuine question, mate, I just don't know anything about the boy, but have seen extremely high praise from others who have seen him, so any info would be greatly appreciated (y) .

Alli is on holidays...a well deserved break I'd say after a spectacular season with MK

The other possibility with Stambouli is that some sort of exchange deal is on the cards (maybe Imbula bearing in mind reports of recent lengthy talks) and we need to make sure he doesn't get injured. That seems a bit far fetched to me since we seem to be in the process of flushing away a EL place but on the other hand Poch has said that he wants to get some early business done so I guess it's a vague possibility. On Dele Alli I'd just say that it is a massive step up from MK Dons the the Premier League and I don't see any way we would risk chucking him in (if he's even eligible).

I've watched a few full games and watched a lot of Dons highlights since January and he looks a real package. Getting a lot of comparisons to Gerrard, he moves the ball around really well, but scores and creates goals too. He plays with great maturity for a someone his age and I feel could see some first team action next year, hope this helps buddy :)

It does indeed mate, and thank you for taking the time to post that for me (y)

He's an ok player, that's about that. Half decent but really slow and not good enough for what we need. A PL mid-table player imo. Pretty pointless signing, I think he was supposed to soften the blow of no Schneiderlin

Unfortunately he isn't eligible.
