This has now been picked up by l'Equipe, which suggests it might have significant legs. Apparently he is 'at the top of their list' and the transfer could accelerate in the next few days.

ETA: Oh, and 'the player is pleased by the offer'. Which makes sense because PSG probably offer you your own bodyweight in euros, a unicorn and a private island.

Party time! :woot:

Unless we then go and replace him with McCarthy, which would effectively mean that we've swapped one average schmaverage player for another who's exactly as uninspiring, and spending £15m in the process. :grumpy:

From a Blanc press conference, according to a PSG forum:

Cabaye will he replaced?
Yes, each player who leaves will be.This is our idea. After, I hope there will not be too many differences between what one wants to do and what is true.

I'd hope we could squeeze a little more than £6m out of them. Cabaye went for £12.5m, so hopefully we could push them up a couple of million.

£8m would be terrific business.

Really, why do you care? What does the difference in £6m or £8m mean to you? We'd be doing well to get £6m for a foreign player who has failed.

And L'Equipe are saying "according to our sources" instead of quoting The Watford Observer, that's interesting.

"Benjamin Stambouli, 24, could be the replacement for the French international in Paris, according to our informations. Bought for 5 millions from Montpellier in 2014, Stambouli could be sold for a slightly higher amount."

With Cabaye gone and now Thiago Motta leaving, PSG need a new DM or two and want at least one to count as homegrown for CL registration purposes, which Stambouli conveniently would.

The extra £2m could go on a new player. It should matter that money came from us the fans.

I don't think Motta is leaving. Just haggling as part of his contract discussions

Got a feeling Stambouli is going to comeback and bite us in the ass one day. Very underused here, I think he's still decent.

My concern here is we are running out of viable signings to fill the gaps.
  • Schneiderlin, widely accepted as our No.1 choice has gone to Utd.
  • Kramer, initially rumoured to be plan b after MS, the rumours have gone very very quiet.
  • Rabiot, suggested by ITK as the man to jump to the top of the list of he became available, has been declared not for sale by PSG.
  • Imbula & Kondogbia previously suggested in the media as being looked at have gone to Porto & Inter respectively.
  • Suarez was rumoured to be very close, again, gone very quiet.
Strange deal this, we want Rabiot to replace Stambouli, amongst others, PSG won't sell, but then target Stambouli for their own squad??

I think day by day McCarthy is looking more and more likely, and it's not a signing that inspires confidence for me. Equally, the CF and WF options are looking thinner.
From Schneiderlin/Kramer/Rabiot, Njie/Werner and Martial/Batshuayi to late moves for McCarthy, Moses and Austin.
I'd hope our new scouting team can do better personally. I remain hopeful.

I'd personally rule out McCarthy. I struggle to see us agreeing a price with Everton. Martinez loves him and he's their best player, plus he moved to Everton two years ago for 14 mill. Don't see how we can get this one done IMO?

I'd be very happy with McCarthy, although I hear he has back problems and this somehow effects his hamstrings. I don't know how true that is though.

Stambouli is a good player - he proved it In France. As did Capoue, as did lots of past signings like Dempsey who scored a bucket load at Fulham. Unfortunately - poor scouting perhaps - these players just don't fit in at spurs. They don't turn shit just our game doesn't suit them.

Good luck to him - i just hope his replacement is what Poch needs.

Bit strange unless we're hoping to get them to loosen their grip on Rabiot.

As for McCarthy, I quite like him, but then I was pleased by the signing of Parker, we need someone to do some of the dirty work for us. He has the same fitness problems as Gerrard had, but it's fixable apparently. I'm quite intrigued by his signing.

For the record, I also wanted Stambouli to come good tho.

Probably. I'd prefer to loan him. I think the same will happen with Townsend if/when he eventually leaves- but it doesn't mean I don't want us to sell him...

If we only were quicker, then we could've used Stambouli as leverage in a deal for Imbula
