tactical reasons...

hmm, the only striker they have that can hold the ball up & take the pressure off when they actually ever get the ball against barca in the european cup final...the golden boot winner...& he wasnt even on the bench!!

their hold up option was michael owen!...it wasnt tactical...theyve fallen out!

You're guessing though. Why would Fergie bother explaining the reasons he put Owen on the bench rather than Berba if they had fallen out? Surely he would just fob of any questions.

I completely agree with adie. Anybody who thinks that there's any justification tactically for leaving the top scorer in the league off the bench is being taken in by Fergies very weak excuse.

Dimitar Berbatov has vowed to stay at Manchester United after admitting he felt 'ashamed' to be left out of the UEFA Champions League final.
The Bulgarian striker, who finished the season as the joint leading scorer in the Premier League, did not even make the bench for United's 3-1 defeat by Barcelona

last weekend.
He was overlooked in favour of Michael Owen

for a substitute's role and he spent the game at Wembley watching the action from the dressing room.
His absence from the touchline sparked suggestions that Berbatov

could have played his last game for United, with the likes of Newcastle United

and Borussia Dortmund

linked with summer bids.
However, the 30-year-old explained why he was not sat alongside his team-mates and remains determined to stay at Old Trafford

next season.

Fergie left Berba out of the champions league squad for tactical reasons. Nothing more, nothing less. I don't think he wants to sell him.

Remember its a quiet period for transfers so the papers/media are fully on make up sh*t mode.

Looking at United's striking options makes it laughable that Berbs didn't make the bench, Hernandez was the man in form so fair enough he started but surely Berbs would have been a good option with his ball retaining skills.

How Fergie has managed to mould Rooney and Berbs into a top-notch strike force I'll never know.

Yep I'm with Adie too....he should of been on the bench and brought on to give them some respite with holding the ball up a bit....

He should of been on the bench for TACTICAL REASONS.

It seems to me that fergie wanted and out and out front man and fell for the myth that is what berba is.the fact he was always at his best for us when dropping deep and creating things and making things happen seem to completely pass him by.very stage indeed.

Indeed.

But you'd have thought in Rooney, a very flexible striker who is equally effective at leading the line and dropping deep and creating that he would be able to have struck up the same kind of striking relationship he had with Keano, with Rooney and Berbs switching between up top and dropping deep.

He may want to stay but IMO he will be sold, Fergie doesn't suffer fools lightly, and Berba for all is skill is a bit of a twat.

If there was a position left for a striker and you wanted that striker to be able to nick a goal who would you pick...?

Owen is a poacher and you can understand the thinking behind him on the bench ahead of Berbatov, the argument of a striker holding up the ball well Rooney is multifunctional and could have done that job probabley better than Berbatov himself.

What was interesting was Berbatov reaction to fuck off from the ground....Poor

There's no two ways about it Fergie royally fucked up leaving Berbatov out. Tactically there's fuck all Owen brings that Chicharito doesn't do better these days. Berbatov probably should've started the game truth be told as after the first 5 minutes united couldn't keep a hold of the ball for love nor money. Tactically fergie got it all wrong putting Giggs and Carrick up against Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets lol. Berbatov on his own with Rooney dropping deep into midfield would've made alot more sense. There is obviously something going on behind the scenes, if not fergie lost the plot leaving out a genuine game changer like Berbatov.

but double0, what's the argument, in a one off game where it's victory or die, of having not only Owen, but four midfielders (one of whom was a winger, Nani) on the bench ahead of Berbatov. Even if you were defending a lead and wanted to bring on (extreme) 3 midfielders off the bench to shore things up, that still means that your bench, which only has 1 defender on it, can have two strikers and not just one past it ex great who spends more time in the treatment room than on the pitch.

Agree with that, I was stunned that he wasn't even on the bench - stunned.

I agreed with your post totally until that last comment - Berbatov a game changer?? You do know that he didnt score or assist a single goal last season after coming on as a sub?

Wasn't aware of that stat no(were'd you get it from?) but he is still a game changer in the sense that manure could've completely changed their style of play by simply swapping out Chicharito for Berbatov. Plus Berbatov is far more adept at making something out of nothing. Chicharito is great if you're dominating possesion and creating chances but is very much a passenger when you get pushed back and are having trouble holding onto the ball.

not true, he assisted Rooney for the 3rd goal in their 4-0 away win over Wigan
http://www.caughtoffside.com/2011/0...ester-united-premier-league-highlights-video/

not sure how many times he has come on as a sub, or how long he got

I stand corrected - 1 assist! I got the stats from the official premier league website. Berbatov came on 7 times as a sub.

Berbatov is a good player but is far more effective when he starts games - he takes to long to get going imo.
