Berbatov to leave the Lane after agent reveals Tottenham contract talks have twice collapsed

Last updated at 11:45am on 17th April 2008 Comments
Dimitar Berbatov looks certain to leave Tottenham in the summer after his agent claimed talks over a new contract have collapsed.

The Bulgarian international striker still has two years left on his current deal with an option for another two years, but his agent, Emil Dantchev, says negotiations have stalled over an extension.

Dantchev says he is meeting Spurs again this week, but a new agreement is unlikely as he is looking to move Berbatov to a club who are playing in the Champions League next season.

He said: "His future will be decided in the next couple of months. We have twice given up talks about Berbatov's new contract and this is due to the fact that Tottenham are unwilling to fix Berbatov's transfer price.

"He is 27-years old and he needs to win trophies. It is time he was transferred to a club that regularly plays in the Champions League. There are seven to eight clubs in Europe interested and we know them well."

It will come as a massive blow to Spurs manager Juande Ramos, who was confident he had convinced the striker to stay after the club won the Carling Cup.

But Tottenham's inconsistent league form and second-round exit from the UEFA Cup has made him have a change of heart. Berbatov admitted on Bulgarian television that he is desperate to play in the Champions League and is worried he is running out of time.

However, Spurs denied there has been any problem with contract talks. A spokesman said: "Dimitar still has two years on his contract with an option for another two years and is on one of the best packages at the club."
Berbatov has been linked with a number of clubs in recent months including Manchester United, Barcelona and AC Milan. Manchester City are keen and can offer the company of fellow Bulgarians Martin Petrov and Valeri Bojinov - but not Champions League football.

Grrrrr :bang:

I just want this sorted, preferably as soon as the window opens. Last thing THFC (never mind my sanity!) needs is for the whole window to be about Berbs staying/ leaving till Sept 1st.

Yeah its dragging on a bit, and nowhere near finished I'm afraid. What a prick this agent guy is, understandable he wants a move for his prize asset (percentage of the transfer fee he's after) but it seems like every few days he pipes up with some new line of bullshit. It's no wonder Berbs can't decide what he wants to do.

The agent is spitting his dummy out because whilst at Spurs we have helped Berba raise his profile in Europe (not just UK) and he wants to move him on so he can make some money.

However, he can't do this as Spurs hold all the cards it would seem by not having fixed his transfer fee in the contract. This tells me that Spurs can demand as much as they want (if they want to) and therefore price Berba out of any proposed move.

The agent's gripe is to renegotiate the contract and get a fixed transfer fee installed so that any potential suitors will know exactly what Berba will cost them.

At least that is what i read in to this and as the agent is in a weak position, he can go and fk himself!

I think we all realise that most agents aren't worth their job title.

He doesnt care about his 'prized asset', just cashing in on him.

If Berbatov had come out and said he hated life at spurs and wanted to move, then brilliant, he can sod off!!

But he hasnt, and from where i'm standing its only his agent that is causing all this grief and not berbatov.

Even if we were in the champions league, dantchev would probably still want him to move to gain a share of his transfer or signing on fee!! And we all know the teams in the champions league will offer more money and more wages due to setting aside that money from the coming season.

Be interesting to see what would happen if CSKA Moscow came calling (im guessing they are in the CL next season)

Its a very un english way I think for a player to have buy out clause in his contract, There arnt many players I think in premierleague with such clauses! But if agent is saying Berba wont sign a new contract unless we put a buy clause in then I think we should just stick one in for £40 million!

His agent is looking for Levy to tell them the fee or buy-out clause that Spurs would accept.Levy knows very well that if he does give them a figure then Dantchev can hawk Berbatov all over Europe and possibly make himself a little bit extra in the deal.
Levy must stand firm to ensure that all potential buyers must deal with him!

His agent has also told skysports that 6-7 clubs are interested in Berbatov, no suprise but still more stirring from his agent.

As far as the contract negotiations go, Dantchev is doing his job. I do not see why he feels the need to speak to the press, but this could reflect a loss of patience with the intransigence of the Board. Possibly he sees it as way of applying pressure.

At least the position is clear now. Berbs wants a new contract with a buy-out clause, so if a Champions League team come knocking he can go if he thinks it is the right move. The club want to set the buy-out price higher than Dantchev thinks is realistic. The club do not feel they have to deal because Berbs is already under contract.

The problem with the club's stance is that we will have a discontented and distracted Berbatov, who feels he is being held hostage and does not really want to play for the club. As opposed to one who is happy at Spurs, but feels he has options. The club probably recognise this, but they are gambling they can sell him this summer for more than buyout price Dantchev wants them to agree to.

It always amazes me that players can feel that way. He signed the damn contract he is on now.
Feeling more and more like we were always just going to be a stepping stone from the off.

we probably have offered to do this. it's just that the likelihood of someone meeting this figure is minimal, which reduces the chance his agent can move him on again. hence he'll advise berba against accepting the offer, regardless of how rewarding it is for berba.

Still amuses me how Man Citeh are in the equation of possible destination, why would he want to go there?!?! If we sell him it must be to a European giant, not to a premiership side, would kill me to see Berba playing for another EPL side.

I don't think Levy/Ramos want to sell him at any price so it will be very interesting to see Berbatovs reactions if the likes of United,Milan or Chelsea come in for him and get a firm NO from the chairman!
Will he happily accept the chairmans decision and get down to serious preparations for next season or will it be open warfare?

his agent would sell him to bognor regis if they offered enough money.

I'd almost like us to give Berba to Milan for nothing, on the proviso that there is no agent fees, and we have 100% of any sell on.

i bet his agent would then "persuade Berba that his future is not in Milan as he could do better, too many agents only think ab out lacing their own pockets to the detriment of the player's careers and i really feel that Berba could suffer from a move, especially to a country he has never played in before.

What annoys me is all this bollocks about "must be playing for a CL club"

If we secured CL football next season it would be "must be playing for a club that can win the CL"

Grade A tosser, but then Berbs must agree with his agent or he would have sacked him. Dantchev is, afterall, Berbs employee.

AC Milan's trip to the CL is not exactly secured anyway...so I wonder what all this tosh about Milan is anyway...
