I've got that video too. My first Spurs compilation. He was unbelieveable. Haven't ever thought to check YouTube but if his goal at The Dell (the muddiest pitch you've ever seen) that is probably my favourite goal of all time. The sheer beauty of the strike in such ugly conditions make me grin even now.

I was there! One of my favourites too - that was when he was being used as centre-forward if I remember rightly.

I actually struggle to answer this question but in my lifetime you could name four or five different players in 85/86/87. The one player I wouldn't have named was Clive Allen though - not to do him down but Lineker would have scored 80. He missed heaps of chances.

Archibald & Crooks are also worth a mention. I think season 1980-81 or 81-82 they hit 50+ goals between them I think. They were the best partnership I've ever seen in spurs shirts. Closely followed by Sheringham and Klinsman.

Unless it's 1857 I think you should change your username

Reading the first post of a thread is for wimps.

But since I've actually been watching Spurs, despite stiff competition from both Bobby Smith and Greavesie, and Clive Allen, I'll have to go for Gazza, although, as GL says, it's a tough pick between 89-90 and 90-91.

waddle 89 end of!

I was just scrolling through incredulous that nobody had said Waddle and then I saw this.

Waddle was a man among boys that season he was just on a completely different level, to anyone in the league, he was so confident on the ball that he just strutted his stuff.
Tragic that Marseille got his best years.

As you say tobbi waddle 89 end of!

Yes, another top contender. What a shame we had to sell him to keep the wolf from the door. Waddle, Gazza and Lineker—what a triumvirate that would have been.

That Private Eye-style fanzine cover with Lineker saying 'I'm really looking forward to Chris Waddle's crosses' and Venables replying 'Er, there's something I've been meaning to tell you' (or words to that effect) is knocking around on the web. I'll try and Google it out.

Ah, The Spur! Thems were the days!

Totally agree with the Waddle '89 comments. I've got that season review on VHS and right from the first game away at Newcastle he was involved in everything. The goal at the Dell was a highlight, but goals against Villa, Norwich, Millwall and Arsenal (when he really ill with flu) stick in the memory too. What a player he was.

Clive Allen or Gazza or you have to think Greavsie or Mackay would be in there somewhere, though sadly I wasn't alive to see them in their prime.

By memory I'd have to go for Gazza, he really was at his most brilliant and he seemed to be the star of every game he played that year. In the FA cup, well we wouldn't have got anywhere near the final had it not been for him.
In a word: GENIUS
Shame his season ended the way it did!

Oh my god, he was quality that season. Didn't think of the Waddler, but some of his goals and runs were sheer world class.
And you think what 4 million quid gets you nowadays, bugger all!
What a class act...
Now I'm thinking of Hoddle's quality in 86-87 and that goal against Oxford, and the chip against Watford too.

There's just too many!

How have we not won the league a dozen more times with the sheer quality of players we have had?
Our fucking defence, that's why!

I'm very lucky that the two seasons that I've managed to get to most games were 88/89 and 90/91.
Gazza was brilliant in the cup run, it's not often you see a guy really drag a team through games like he did. Waddle in 88/89 was my favourite though he was just sublime, there was a run of games when you just couldn't believe he could top his last goal but he did.
Little mention for Paul Stewart in his last season too, went into midfield and was brilliant always loved his goal against Coventry at WHL

too hard to pick one from Freund, Sherwood, Saib and Berti, what a midfield that was

Surprised no one's mentioned it but one of Paul Robinson's seasons just after we signed him (can't remember what year it was)

I seem to remember him saving countless shots, and therefore countless points in the league.

It's since all gone a bit wrong for him :-|

He did have a good season but with meaning to sound rude it seems a little crazy to me to compare that season of his to any of the Gazza/Waddle/Klinsmann/Allen seasons.

Even Lineker and Sheringham must have years that would be closer to the best then that Robinson had (was Robinson even our best player that year??)

Best performance by a Spurs player for one whole season has to be Chris Waddles last year with us - he was unbelievable!
waddle was on fire the last year.ginola, klinsmann and lineker when he hit 35 goals are others but probably allen and gazza...
