Their opponents in the final, Atletico Nacional, have made a request for the Copa Sudamericana title to be awarded to this team, along with the prize money so they could be shared amongst the victims families.

Amazing gesture

Agree with the prize money going to the victims families, that's definitely the right thing to do.

As for the championship, I don't know I guess it's an extremely difficult one. There is probably only a few players remaining from the team, no manager or coach etc. Not sure if they have a youth team that they could get a side together and play the match in honour of the people that lost their lives.

They were due to play their last league match of the season on Sunday.

I've been following the story throughout the day, it's absolutely heartbreaking.

Thoughts go out to all the families and friends of any of the victims. Such a tragic event. :(

It's fucking weird because I never heard of the team before till I caught the last 10 mins of their game against Palmeras on Sunday.

I fucking hate planes and all this just has made me freak out.

Some of the other top clubs have said they will offer them players and have suggested that they should be exempt from relegation for three years. Great idea and it's brilliant to hear that they are getting so much support from other clubs.

Minute's silence before the Liverpool v Leeds. Irony probably lost on a few Liverpool fans.

Watching GloboTV here in Brazil- Still speculation and joining the dots at this moment in time but they it's believed that the plane had enough fuel for 3000km, about enough for the journey they were to embark upon. Unfortunately as they approached the airport there was a delay with a plane incoming or leaving (i'm not sure) and this forced them to circle until it was safe to head towards the airport for landing, they think this is the point the fuel ran out. Unbelievably negligent if true.

Spare a thought for the survivors for a moment too. The GK has had his leg amputated, the journalist has severe head injuries, Ruschel has spinal injuries but they worry it may prevent him from walking again. :(

The two air stewardesses seem to be okay.

What causes someone to survive rather than die in that situation? Fascinated to find out how.

Chance, trajectory, seat position, physical fitness. Some combination of those.

Always goes through my mind whenever I fly. Incidentally 70% of the time I fly, a massive air disaster follows within a week or two. Happened this week, Turkey, and most prominently New York 2001. Fortunately I don't fly very often.

Sitting at the back can make the difference. The G force of the impact is usually lower and can bring it into the survivability range.

Brazil announced a 7 day postponement of matches. But i am fascinated to know what will happen with this club. Hope they will field a team again at some point in the future if not next year then the year after. Will be an interesting story to follow after such a horrific tragedy.

I thought the season had finished? If not, I would cancel their fixtures and start fresh next year.

I always think that sitting at the back is safest... I mean you never hear of a plane going into a mountain backwards do you?

Planes can crash tail-first or wing-first, though. The most important thing if you survive the initial crash is to get out of the plane before the fuel ignites, so sit as close as possible to an exit. Also helpful to be skinny, fit, ruthless enough to exploit those two attributes in beating others to escape,to be travelling alone, to have your shoes already on, to be sober and to gulp down the oxygen the moment the mask drops.

I don't understand how a plane can just run out of fuel and drop out of the sky, how does a pilot and co-pilot make such a bad error?
