Notts County are hopeful of wrapping up a deal to sign former England defender Sol Campbell.
Campbell is a free agent after leaving Portsmouth in the summer and BBC Sport understands he has held "encouraging" preliminary talks with the Magpies.
The 34-year-old has been seen at Meadow Lane and it is understood he has been offered a deal by the League Two side.
Campbell, who has 73 caps, played for England under Notts director of football Sven-Goran Eriksson.
The Magpies have been linked with a host of big-name players since Eriksson arrived, including David Beckham and Dietmar Hamann.

Sol Campbell to Notts County?

The ex Spurs Captain, Arsenal Captain and England regular, having seen out his contract with Portsmouth to become a free agent for the second time in his playing career seems to be lining up a six year contract with the World's oldest League Club, Notts County.

Campbell is seen by their Director of Football, Sven Goran Erriksen, as a key component, at least short term, for their charge up the English leagues. There is also an option allegedly to provide for his keenness to take his coaching badges while being employed and work closely with one of the most astute Managers in the game.

The lukewarm interest in Campbell seems to have dissipated from the likes of Newcastle United and one or two Premiership teams that still require in-depth defensive cover.

Will Sol Campbell do a job for Notts County? His mere presence in the English Division Two may attract further interest from other top drawer players on the wane. Lee Hughes, ex Oldham Athletic is a recent acquirement and is already seen as one of the favourites for the top marksman in Division Two.

60k a week? Isn't there a League ruling that the wages for the squad can't exceed 60% of total turnover? And County didn't do that well with ST sales last season either.

Apparently there is a loophole in League 2 if a wealthy benefactor aka their new owner gives the money as a gift or something along those lines. So Judas is on something around the 50-60k mark in wages, ridiculous!

did anyone see the presser? thought he came across as more of an arse than usual...what a smug git...had to laugh when he justified his move by saying he wants to join the oldest club in the world! why didn't he do that when they had no cash?

For 60k a week he better wear a decent pair of shinpads - they won't tolerate his like down in that Division playing the Billy Big Bollox.

cant see how the 60k a wk thing is right either. yea he'd be on a good wage there alright, comparitively to others but i cant see him being on 60k.

did they mention if its a player & coach contract for the 5 years? surely its not just a playing contract for that lenght is it?

5 year contract, jesus christ... No wonder he turned down other offers, i doubt anyone else were offering him such a long deal.

Just watched the press conference on SSN - hilarious.

He looked really underwhelmed, and seemed to be struggling for what to say about the move instead of just telling the truth i.e. "they offered me 60k a week".

I was also wondering how long he'd hold out before resorting to "oldest club in the world" - about 2.5 seconds.

Damn home game for Barnet this saturday. I'll be at WHL for the B'ham game otherwise I'd had gone along and shown my appreciation for an Ex-Spur:grin:
They're at Daggers on 2nd January so I doubt I'll be able to cheer him on then either.
I doubt they'll want him in a season but he's got the contract.
