He is doing his thing? His thing has already cost us villa, if he hadn't have messed around he would have signed for us before Madrid made their move. Villa himself has said Madrid did more in three days than we did in months.
If we want benteke then we need to give villa what they want, they are not going to cave in at the last minute, they don't need to he has 3 years left on his contract.
The reality is we will have to pay over the odds, to think we can get someone who is 22 and scored 19 league goals for what we want to pay is stupid. Lambert strikes me as the sort of man who will dig his heels in if we mess them around. We need to stop penny pinching and sign him soon and get him working with AVB and the team.

Don't be daft, Villa himself said he just decided to stay in Spain and would otherwise have joined us. Nothing to do with money or delay.

And if you look at the things posted by 'looklikemodric' on the other forum, he said weeks ago that it was between us, Arsenal, and Athletico, that we had all offered the same thing and it was Villa's choice, and he maintained that he though we had the least chance out of the three teams to get Villa. So hardly a case of Levy dicking around, we put our bid in and the player decided to go somewhere else. So what? That happens sometimes.

No my cup is not half empty, I happen to think we are not far off being a bloody good team and winning trophies.
However I do think we need to be more positive in the transfer market, if we want a player get it done as soon as we can, if that means paying more to get who we want then so be it. If we win something next season and get in the champions league the extra spent now will be irrelevant.
Ahh the Leeds method, it worked out so well for them.

How accurate the numbers are but according to the figures here http://www.sportingintelligence.com...ng-where-the-money-goes-and-what-next-190601/

We could in theory gain an extra 30million in TV revenue for next season. Could explain our spending and how we're not likely to do a "Leeds"

We are not in any danger of doing a Leeds (but if we build the stadium we are in danger of doing a Valencia) as long as we keep to our budget and don't start throwing money at things to just get them done, as people are suggesting. Villa were another club that did that and they were almost relegated last year.

I take your point, but I think to take the next step up there comes a point where we need to decide if we take a gamble or not. I don't mean spend like a drunken sailor I mean pay (for example) 5million more for benteke, I think his goals would get us in the champions league, then the extra spent has more than played for itself.

If we were only lacking a goalscorer and this would be a guarantee for CL football then Benteke represents a good gamble at a few million extra. Sure.
But nothing is assured and the 5 million extra may be a hail mary.

It annoys me just like the next Spurs fan that we can't just bring in players from one day to the next, but I also believe we are where we are on because we have not inflated our salaries and our transfer fees. That means cutting away some opportunities, but it also means that we will eventually end up with Benteke at around 20 million instead of 25 million - the 5 million being more or ess the equivalent of a years salary for someone on 100k.

Jews do not simply "do a Leeds".

And Levy is the finest Jew in all the land.

This is the problem - nothing guarantees CL football. You can't go spending masses of money thinking that it will guarantee you CL football, especially if you only have a 35K stadium!

Totally agree. However I do have a pretty strong feeling that Benteke would be a huge addition for us and on that basis it would certainly improve our chances providing he doesn't get injured for a prolonged period of time.

This is from a moderator on Villa Talk...his view on the Benteke situation. Really good post IMO:

I really don't understand the stick he has got.

We buy young, cheap players with something to prove and we pay them accordingly. Should we really be surprised that when they do prove themselves and other clubs come sniffing and can offer better prospects of success and far more money the players head is turned?

He isn't one of us and he didn't grow up loving Aston Villa. The truth is that just about every single one of us in his position would have their head turned. Personally, I'm disappointed in him for not giving us more than a year, sure I am, I think he should have given us more than that but ultimately I don't really blame him for wanting to make the most of his career, it is how we got him in the first place after all.

So far, he hasn't really done a lot wrong. He has formally requested a transfer and then pretty much kept his mouth shut and his head down, no bitching in the press. That could change obviously but I will judge him on that when and if it happens not before.

He has conducted himself as a professional even if we don't like what he has done. Compare that to the conduct of the two faced arse Downing who said he owed us (and did) and then was caught posing in a bar with a Liverpool scarf. Or compare it to the horrific attitude of Gareth Barry when we dared to want his market value from Liverpool, do people remember that newspaper interview he gave? Yet recently a lot of people were saying they would like to have him back. Milner, well he as with everything the lad does was the true professional.

Benteke is far from being as bad (so far) as Downing and Barry and although I'm disappointed in the outcome and in him I don't actually think he deserves the stick he is getting presently and put it down to just being a manifestation of same feelings in other people. We all know Benteke is special and it will hurt to lose him especially so quickly and after so many others in recent years.

The club wants to sign young, hungry players rather than misfits like Ireland and N'Zogbia so unfortunately it is going to bite us on the arse at times when we really get it right because those players are young and hungry.

Still I'd rather have people like Benteke for a year than Heskey for 4.

If he goes, he goes. We will move on and in Lambert I'm convinced (so long as he is backed) upwards.

So if we get the price we want he can go, if we don't he can stay. If the later happens and he starts playing up, then he will deserve stick but he doesn't particularly so far in my view.
