I think I've figured it out, he is good at giving the opposition an extra player on the pitch by being invisible.

He isn't suited to the role we want him to play, too often he is caught between helping the front man and helping the midfield two. The role in general needs to be better defined, and Dempsey needs to have a role that suits what he is good at - being a physical presence, albeit not like a proper target man, getting into the box and scoring goals.

If we can improve our all round attacking and defensive play we will see more from Dempsey, however I think JD and Adebayor is better than Dempsey and a striker at the moment. AVB has a tough decision on his hands

Must say I don't like the scapegoating that's being done of Dempsey.
He's doing ok, but he will never be accepted at Spurs as we demand a van der Vaart in his position.
Should never have been bought, we're at a point where the quality of our first team and the production rate of our acedemy means we should only sign players that either are or can become world class - ok players aren't any point in signing, could just as well play academy boys. I would have much rather played Ryan Mason or Harry Kane ahead of Dempsey.
6m or how much he cost has been wasted, it's money we need to gather into one pile to sign the players we truely need.

His goals has won two games for us, Southampton and Man Utd.
He's doing what's asked of him by the manager, giving us a midfield trio when we don't have the ball, and two upfront when we attack.

Problem is he isn't what Spurs fans expect from a player in his position, and he's not flash with the ball at his feet.
He's a grey player that will be overlooked by most and turned into a hate figure unless his goal ratio is extreme.

Should have never been bought, but he's here now,
he could do better, but doesn't deserve the abuse he's getting at the moment.
I agree he's probably not good enough for us, but that's not his fault. It's not like he isn't trying

He was terrible today. Very poor off the ball movement, little tenacity to his game, no shooting or striking awareness at all, looked almost as lacklustre as Berbatov used to on the pitch for us.

I'm trying to find something good to say in his defence, but based on today i can't think of a single thing.

Just as annoyed with AVB though for not seeing this and subbing him earlier for either Defoe or Sigurdsson (who at least covers a lot of ground when playing for us).

Yet, he played the full 90 minutes. I just see no redeeming features to his game. His shooting technique is awful and seems only capable of scoring from millimeters out.

Am I right in saying we've made all three subs in every game? I get the impression that AVB thinks that he wins the games as opposed to the players...

Off topic, but I don't buy this: "We're in transition" argument. For whatever reason, we've lost our two most creative players and have not replaced them adequately. But the bottom line is we've gone from one of the most watchable teams in the Premiership, to arguable the least.
