It is a very worrying trend and needs to stop

Villas-Boas tries to protect us tactically to hold a lead but we still concede, what needs to change ?

Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, we held it against Manyoo and Southampton. I think its a bit risky because then you look like a mug when Norwich scores two late goals to win, but AVB perhaps thinks we'll defend it more often than we'll concede it.

Quite simply the predictable negative/defensive substitution every time we are trying to close the game out - particularly when we are controlling the game by in large. Sometimes it will be merited though, we just need the likes of Parker to bring on who are going to defend better. And of course, sometimes its the correct thing to do and we'll still lose, that's football.

Needs to get a better feel of when to do it, and cut out doing it every time regardless of the conditions and circumstances of the game which are unfolding in front of him. IMO anyway.

I think the problem is that in to many games we're not scoring the goals our play deserves. If we get into the last 15 minutes and we're 3 goals up we're not going to face the bombardment on our goal and won't need to see the game out. The best way to defend a lead is to score more goals.

There's no point bringing on defensive players if there's no one to hold onto the ball and keep possession to kill time especially with 20 or 30 minutes left. We lost two worldies in Modders and Rafa who could do this with ease among other things. We just invite wave after wave of attack by giving the ball right back to the opposition. We've no one in midfield to keep posssession and we've no one upfront to hold the ball up so basically when we drop deep we're fucked. Best bet is to just try and keep scoring and keep our foot on the gas for the full 90.

Sorry how were any goals Lloris' fault? I thought Verthongen was the one who flicked a stupid leg at the ball and Jan again who got beaten in the air for the winner?

every game we lead we invite our opponents to stay in our half and nice as we are we give them the ball and look what they do with it. Looks funny because it doesn't matter if the opponent is ManUtd, Chelsea, Southampton or Norwich Reserves. It is a annoying losing mentality.

I thought Lloris played very well...I think if its ever the time to give him a run maybe its now.

As for late goals, we had this habit under Jol and Santini and prior to that. We seemed to cut it out when Harry was in charge and now its back again.

I think the problem is we really look like a side that doesn't have too many goals in it. Possession is excellent but we don't carve out enough clean cut chances. A lot of our goals this season have been well placed finishes from outside the box or just inside, or scrappy goals like Dempseys against Southampton. Our play seems to have lots of structure and we build up very well but in the final third we lack the movement or killer pass. Basically a lot of sides will happily sit behind the ball for large parts of the game and let us keep the ball and pass it around (and get tired) then hit us later on.

So the reasons I think are:

- tiredness from lots of possession and little to show from it
- not creating enough chances at the other end
- individual mistakes
- and possibly protective substitutions handing the impetus to the opposition late on

So basically: we are unlikely to get thrashed and will be tough to beat with the way we play at the moment, but we also won't be battering anyone and our games will be very close in general - I anticipate a lot of 1-0 or 2-1.

I think the returns of Kaboul, Ekotto, Parker, Dembele and Adebayor may change a lot of this though.

It used to happen when Jol was manager, we'd control games for long periods, battering the opposition - then when all seemed well, off went a striker and on came a defender and BAM!

We'd end up drawing or losing.

You've got to look at United - they never stop looking to attack when in possession. This is why they win titles regularly and we win squat.

If anything, we should have taken off a player who's not good at holding possession (Dempsey) and brought on a guy who is (Lennon/Townsend). Siggy could have moved forward, Falque inside to Siggy's role, and then Lennon/Townsend to the RW. That gives us good options in attack to at least hold the ball up and retain it. Townsend/Lennon would have given us pace as well that could really drive the ball into Norwich's half, work it to the corner, waste time, etc.

We badly need Adebayor fit and on form. He adds a whole other dimension to our attack and helps create space for others in the final third not to mention he's actually a decent aerial threat for our quality wingers to aim at. I expected our passing game to suffer after losing VDV and Modders ontop of bringing in a new coach with very different methods to our last one. We really shot ourselves in the foot though during the summer but we always seem to do things the hard way leaving everything late and rushing around like chickens with their heads cut off. AVB has really been getting results inspite of our glaring limitations in midfield and upfront which hopefully we can recruit a top DoF like the barca guy or Baldini to help rectify. We just need to be patient and hope that we can fixes some of our problems in January but we all know that transfer window is abit mental price wise. We might be stuck until the summer. Patience is the key though this season, but we really need to get our shit together in the transfer market. It's not all about making money it's about building a balanced team who can challenge and getting them together so the coach can whip them into shape asap. To put it bluntly it's Levy's fault that we've got an unbalanced squad and still got afew players AVB would rather not have. Hopefully we can pick up atleast one quality addition in January and really make a push for the top 4.

We've been ahead in 11 games this season, but we've only won 6 of them and we've lost two. That's not great, and it's especially bad when you consider that our fixture list has been relatively kind so far. On top of that, 8 of the 16 goals we've conceded this season have come in the last 15 minutes of games.

I agree with most of what u speak of biglad apart from tiredness coming from possession. If we have the ball we don't have to chase it and press the oppononent, we make the ball do the leg work. The other team should be tiring chasing us. When you have possession of the ball you control the tempo of the game.

What were missing is that Modric, Mata, Silva (although what has happened him this season) type of player that our system relies so heavily on in the final third.

Holding onto a lead is fine as a tactic, but the way to do it is to keep possession, not to sit back and let the opposition just launch wave after wave of attacks.

Having a striker who could hold up the ball (Adebayor) and a midfielder who can hold onto it (Dembele) would help, but generally AVB needs to get into them and say that the way to defend a lead isn't to sit inside your box and hoof the ball clear if it comes near you.

One thing I was hoping for when AVB took over was an improvement in our possession football. At the moment I'm still waiting.
