Could Lewis Holtby be the answer?

Nope, he isn't the answer. However he could become a very valuable member of the squad because he could realistically play in midfield too if we have any problems. Its clear he's found it difficult to adjust to our team dynamics but that was to be expected. He isn't the solution simply because he isn't talented enough. But what he does give us is a solid buffer for us to go into the market and take some risks in getting that star no10 we badly need.

I think had we waited until summer to sign Holtby and he had gone on performing in the Bundesliga the way he was, he would be included in everyone's mock lineups for next season and everyone would think the attacking midfield position was solved. Whether that is the case or not idk, but I certainly think Holtby has the potential to be top class, as does Sigurdsson. They are both young still.

How does just being young give you the potential to be world class?.. These two are early 20's and at that age you normally can see whether a player is top draw or not, and these two are definitely not.

Not always, there are sometimes players that will come good in there mid/late 20's.

Anyone else wondering why we didn't see Holtby at all during the first few pre-season friendlies???

Is he being given a longer rest due to the U21 Euros?

Got high hopes for this kid personally.

You don't get to be Skipper of Germany's U21's for no good reason.
He looked different class for u21s. Movement, vision and great technique. Think he just tried a little too hard to impress last season.

I think our starting midfield will be Sandro, Paulinho and Dembele

And our second string midfield will be Livermore/Parker, Holtby and Carroll/Siggy

The second string has the potential to develop into a decent unit - especially for cup games

It's just modric all over again, playing him behind the striker when he should be playing in CM

I actually think he is our modric replacement

It's strange that some people are pushing for Tommy to start and have an important role when we already have a better player of a similar age, operating in the same area, in Holtby.

I think Holtby is going to play an important role this season. He was quality in the Euro u-21's playing a more familiar role. Genuinely creative and tenacious. I think he will force himself into the starting 11 in no time and stay there

I actually think Tom Carrol is our modric hes range of passing is better. I do like holtby hes got great potential but maybe he didnt perform last season because he came to us in the middle of the season he would of settled down by now. His work rate was fantastic tho, still very young and german.

i do think someone like Holtby needs to be in starting 11 as we have too many similar players in midfield and we need that player with the smart thinking, clever passes to start the play off.

True. Looks like one of those that needs a run of competitive games to be comfortable with our set-up.

Holtby should be a first team player for us next season.

Struggled last season because we played disgusting stagnant football throughout the second half of the season which isn't good for a tenacious attacking player like Holtby.

I was pretty impressed with Carroll in the game against South China, he played a lot of nice passes.
