Tottenham must up their price to get Raya

Tottenham have some ground to make up in their initial valuation of Brentford goalkeeper David Raya.

After clutching thin air for Harry Kane's free-kick, the 27-year-old recomposed himself to give a more than competent display at Tottenham on Saturday. Afterwards, Brentford boss Thomas Frank was, typically, frank, that the price on his goalkeeper's head was £40million. 'Absolutely, it's realistic,' said Frank. Yet, with one year left on contract, Tottenham consider £20m the more realistic price, cue some interesting negotiations.

Raya, who is also admired by Chelsea, is understood to favour Tottenham with Hugo Lloris considering an offer from Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

Brentford have lined up Dutch keeper Mark Flekken of Wolfsburg for around £11m, after considering Liverpool's price for Caoimhin Kelleher, er, unrealistic and would also need to pay a sell-on percentage of Raya's profit to his former club Blackburn Rovers.

Good for Brentford if they actually get that number but Raya isn't that good to justify that amount with one year left on his deal.

Raya makes the most sense for us - especially with (fingers crossed) Laporte and Romero playing ahead of him.

I believe he counts as HG so that will push his price up too.
He does and considering the other squad positions that we need reinforcements/replacements in I think going non-HG for our 'keeper and stand-in is unwise personally, hence why a Raya or Pickford would be my preference over say a Mamardashvilli.

Liked him before Saturdays game and , unfortunately, he really did play well against us to cement that opinion.

If he really does favour Spurs over Chelsea then i can see us doing a £30m ish plus add ons type deal with Brentford to get closer to their price. Any alternative will cost at least as much and the home grown thing is massive given our squad makeup. There's been a few snippets of transfer activity released since Saturday which suggests everyone is (finally) aware we need to spend big (and well) to sort this mess out.

Superb saves near the end against us, think he's ideal for us at this current moment in time.

Nah hes a quality keeper and would be our keeper for next 5 years min. The one year thing should drop price but he would probably be happy to sign a new contract at Brentford so for me we should just get it over the line

If I'm Raya I can see a position at Spurs which could be mine for years. That's got to be tempting. Same stands for all these keepers we're linked with, but the crucial detail is the keeper needs to move THIS summer or the opportunity will probably be gone. I think the Martinez ship has sailed as Villa have had this storming run under Emery. Maignan might be heavily linked if we get Tiago Pinto as DOF and Lloris might 'have a word', but I'd prefer Raya personally.

Still no blue background? 😅

This is a fairly balanced analysis of Raya.

Some of it's conclusions:

(Positives)
- Long passing is World Class and best attribute, however his short passing under pressure isn't actually very good
- Elite aerial ability at claiming and parrying crosses.

(OK)
- His overall game - 1 on 1s, is good without being exceptional.

(Criticisms)
- Reach and positioning on free kick shots isn't great.
- Knees give away which way he's about to dive on pens.
- Tends to parry shots back into danger

His short passing game under pressure would be a concern for me, you can see in the video his first touch and ball playing ability isn't actually that great.

This is fundamental to how Slot's team play, so I'd want this to be elite to offset some other holes in his game.

My impression is he'd be an upgrade on 2023 Lloris and Forster - but possibly one we'd have to address again in 1-2 years.

I could be wrong, but not sure he's worth £40m personally, regardless of his contract.

His short passing game is nowhere near a concern. Its absolutely wrong to say his short passing isnt great.
He can certainly pass out left or right, equally well.
I have seen him enough over the years at Blackburn & Brentford and odd Spain game to know that he is 2 footed with his short passing and doesnt panic under pressure.

As for as video clip of him showing short passes have errors - who doesnt ? I can show Allison & Ederson with similar errors.

Point to take is, based on manager needs he has capability to play long or short.

Cheers. I haven’t seen as much of him over 90 minutes as you, so I’ll take that as a positive.

I have a few question marks on his overall game, but hopefully his footwork is better than this shows - and as you say is skewed towards rare errors.

I’m really hoping for a keeper of Lloris quality in 2012, but not sure we’ll get that lucky.

Mike Maignan for me 7 days a week. But no idea if that’s even an option.

Raya, Henderson, Pickford, Kelleher … if we go for HG status for the GK position, they’re all decent/good (but not 100% perfect) options.
