Wouldn't they have needed Barca's permission to speak to him as he still had a year and a half left on his contract

I REALLY want to say yes. However, I can't help but think about the times that Barca "never spoke to Fabregas". The whole world knew they were in contact, don't see how Barca can complain really? To be honest, they all piss me off (Barca, Real Madrid, Man City, Man Utd, Chavs etc etc). They think that can just mention a player in the press, get anyone associated with the club to speak highly of that player, then they will end up with what they want. Personally, anyone who can 'get one over' these clubs = Massive respect from me!!

I think they made a official enquiry and/or a bid and there seems to be alot of rumours of a pre contract from the english media

so, as others have stated before, we are assuming that he's fallen out with the Barca players on a personal level rather than being annoyed at being played wide? Because he'll be played out wide for us. Don't know if he operated similar position before joining Barca?

I suppose if his motivation is to get into the Spanish WC squad, then he'd ideally want to play in a similar formation to best show he can perform the job. And as Spain play no strikers, much like Barca, then maybe he is happy to play as a roaming wide man?

Why are you so sure we'd play him wide? Especially considering he is best as a striker?

Before Barca he was maybe the best striker in the world. If we were lucky enough to get him that's where we should play him and is assume where he wanted to play.

You're right, i'm only assuming he'd be played there, but like i said, i didn't know what his role for Valencia was. If he can then thats awesome, it'd be even better that he can play out wide (as current) and in the middle, that provides way more versatility.

On a side note, not sure how Messi and Neymar are going to get along.

in todays Mundo Deportivo
Waiting for the Catalan club and scorer of the Spanish team by common accord any offers received (Tottenham looks best placed team), the fact is that the intention of the club, believes that Messi is a exemplary one and only, is to take Neymar to the Argentine star ideal companion, its complement rather than your competition.

On his position, its clear we want a striker/winger and for me villa is that and him playing off Ade in a 433 would be his strongest position as ade would always go wide and Villa would always be the only guy in the box. Which in reality means that Ade would be wide and Villa up front, hes done this for Valencia, Spain and Barca. He has always been best at attacking the box rather just sticking in it.

Italian football journo Rossella Marrai - who says she's a friend of Franco Baldini - says he is the man who will bring David Villa to Spurs and we can expect Miralem Pjanic to follow him.

Not sure exactly how credible her claims are, but her Twitter feed makes for very interesting reading - https://twitter.com/RossellaMarrai

(Posting this in both Pjanic and Villa threads)

A front 3 of Ade, Villa, and Bale would actually be really interesting. All 3 can rotate around and play wide and central, could cause defenses a lot of problems.

Would absolutely love to see that combo here. I feel Pjanic can really attribute to our team.

I know Ade only turned up for the last 3 games this year but I'd actually be very happy with that. We still need another striker who is first team material as we'll be playing a lot of games and incur injuries, and Defoe doesn't seem to work in this system.

Ade for me does some of his best work off the ball. He makes clever runs, not as a striker getting into goal-scoring positions, but as a dummy runner pulling his man wide. He presses a lot and hassles defenders and can hold up the ball well when on his game. He has a tendency to take the ball wide and drag his man wide too when he doesn't have the ball. If he does this then with Villa coming in from the left to get into a goal-scoring position, along with Bale, who is unplayable at times cutting in on the right, we could absolutely destroy defences.
