So what do you propose we do about it?

You sound a bit like Statto off fantasy football league :)

Only messing mate. It isn't the best stat in the world though, is it. This season didn't really help either.

at least we can say we've been there every year. how many other clubs have done that btw (apart from the big 4)?

We've always had a leaky defence. Plus, we've had more years in the premier league in which to concede goals than most teams. I bet we aren't the worst if you take the total number of goals conceded and then divide it by seasons in the league, or even games played. That would be a fairer analysis (wow, anal ysis - almost sounds like a nasty illness).
Actually, a couple of years ago our defence was one of the meanest in the league. Pyo, King, Dawson, Salty, in form Robbo, Davids and Carrick in midfield. Worked a treat. There is hope.

I wonder where we stand in terms of goals scored? Total prem goals, average per season, average per game. I won't look it up but I'm sure it makes us look better than the goals conceded stat.

We don't want to go back to George graham days - boring boring 1-0 wins or losses. Give me a 5-3 or a 4-4 any day!!

A fully fit back 4 of Hutton Woodgate King Bale and a world class keeper is as good as most in the league. With a world class protector/destroyer infront we could be really solid next season

Bale is not proven as a defender; he looks quite raw and jury is out on whether left back will be his position.

I still think Lee is our only capable leftback, but Ramos obviously doesn't and he is on his way out. It is a position we need to improve for next season.

Defending isnt just abotu the back 4, there is the keeper and the midfield that also come into this, so lets not just single out the denenders on this one! i have been saying since god knows when now that the midfield hasnt helped us look more soild at the back with giving the ball away cheap and also not tracking back or gettign caught up field (well chimbonda does that more than the midfield). We need to work on the defence for sure, but i think the greater problem lays with the midfield, who dotn seem to defende great (not all but as a unit they dont) or really attack with creativity and make alot of good chances

We've never really been much good at defending apart from the very odd season, playing attractive attacking football has always been our tradition and one I certainly want maintained.

Saying that it would be nice if we could get the balance right and keep a few clean sheets. !!!!!

Stalteri and Lee were part of our best defence since the Prem began.

The fact that Everton are next on the list proves something, doesn't it? Over the last two or three seasons both have (rightly) been the only real contenders (or should that be pretenders) to knocking one of the Top Four off their perch.
I have faith in Ramos that it will be sorted next season. This one has been terrible, defensively, and has rocked a few peope's confidence but pre-season will fix it. Saying that, this attacking style football is bound to leave a few openings at the back, isn't it?

Isn't there only something like 7 teams who have played every season in the premiership?

If you worked it out for goals per season we would move much higher

If we upgrade the midfield to be more creative, we'll score many more goals. The ability to threaten every time we attack will make our opponents go on the defensive more and lessen pressure on our own defence.

1 creative midfielder & Lassana Diarra holding could solve a lot of problems, because I feel we actually have a good set of defenders now (Chimbonda aside)
